righteous conduct. Precept is not
enough. Spiritual maturity is at-
tamed by him who proceeds to
transmute his highest aspirations
into habitual deeds of integrity,
justice and compassion. Thus we
are offered a plan for victorious
living and a discipline leading to
self-mastery and moral regenera-
tion.
In accentuating the role of the
individual and his accountability
for his character and conduct,
Judaism takes issue with current
philosophies which avow that hu-
man personaltiy is not only con-
ditioned but cempletely deter-
mined by hereditary, environ-
mental and economic factors. The
effect of such teachings has been
to discount the element of free
will and self determination, to
scorn ideal values as chimerical.
In the Nazi system this attitude
of contempt for the individual
personality led to the cult of
brute force, to a suppression of
all human rights, and to unpar-
alleled barbarism. In civilized
circles the teaching that the in-
dividual's fate is predetermined
by an inevitable "wave of the
future" has led to defeatism, to
inertia and to a lethargy which
expressed itself in reluctance to
make sacrifices for ideals.
Judaism gives primacy to the
vital energies of the individual.
It calls for a fresh perception
of human values, for a ner cour-
age in facing life, for a re-birth
of human dignity as a necessary
prelude to a just society and a
peaceful humanity. Once the self
is fortified with a sense of per-
sonal accountability, the basis is
established for "a new heaven
and a new earth." Society is not
an assembly of preconditioned or-
ganisms reacting blindly to in-
ternal and external stimuli, but
an aggregation of individuals who
because they bear the image of
God are expected to exercise dis-
cretion and volition. Such self -
conscious and responsible per-
sonalities will unite in coopera-
tive endeavor to "perform the
will of God with a perfect heart."
This is the burden of one of the
most ancient passages in the lit-

that legend marked him as an
educated person, because she
doubted if any of the American-
born boys who were her class-
mates at high school had ever
heard of it. Jake was impatient.
"Nu, go on, Miss Koppleman.
Go on, Max. What is it, where
MacGregor sits?"
So Max resumed: " 'Where
MacGregor sits' — goes the
Scotch saying, Jake—'there' "-
But Max, his own tact dominant
over his recent wrath at his cou-
sin, hesitated. "Where MacGreg-
or sits," he floundered, at a loss
what to say until, inspired by a
companionable smile from the
girl, he concluded, with a chuckle,
"there should sit also by his side
Mrs. MacGregor . . . Ain't—
ain't that correct, bonny Miss
Koppleman?"
The girl dropped her eyes de-
murely and murmured "Aye!"
and began to write the check.
Jake looked at her. He looked
at Max.
"From your mouth, Max, into
God's ears!" he sighed. Then to
the girl: "For the same time
you are writing, Miss Kopple-
man, so write down another
zero."
"Education my cousin Jake
ain's got," observed Max. "And
common and a big show-off he is.
And tact he don't practically
know what it is. But a heart he
got"—and Max's eyes were misty
—"like gold!" So in that way
I got my thousand dollars. And
a year later at Jake's Chanukah

creates with instruments that are
unbroken. But God often uses
broken instruments to achieve
His purpose." Israel which has
been victimized in every time
and place has become the vehicle
for the formulation and transmis-
sion of a universal outlook, a
broad perspective embracing all
humanity and an eloquent plea
for human brotherhaad. We live
in decisive times when the do-
minion of arrogance is meeting
with crushing defeat. As Jews
we must band ourselves together
with our fellowmen of all creeds
and peoples to lay the founda-
tions of a better world. Ours is
the historic duty to be the bet-
ter equipped for this task by

In the concluding Tekiah Ged- rendition of Scotch—"there—"
olah our ancestors heard the And here she stopped, embarras-
hopeful note of the Shofar Shel sed. Ah, the color in her face
Mashiah heralding a Messianic era as she realized that she had in-
of liberation for a sore beset excusably intruded in a personal
humanity. As a concomitant of matter!
"Go on, Miss Koppleman,"
an ideal order of justice and
peace, a brighter day would at urged Jake.
But the girl was in a predica-
last dawn for suffering Israel.
For, say the rabbis, "when trou- ment. Possessing tact, she could
ble comes upon the world, Israel not finish the saying that would
is the first to suffer and when reveal to Jake, as it did to her,
joy comes to the world, Israel the reason for Max's conduct at

benefits." The holocaust of our her embarrassment, however, she
age began with a program of told Max that his knowledge of

ity. By the same token, the re- ROSH HASHONAH

trodden.
A sage of the third century

said, "God is not like man. Man

urgy, "And therefore impose
Thine awe upon all Thy works
and Thy dread upon all that Thou
hast created, that all may fear
Thee and creatures prostrate
themselves before Thee, that they
may all form a single band to
do Thy will with a perfect heart."
Human cooperation is not to be
forged by force, nor propelled by
mob frenzy. It is to be motivat-
ed by the fear of God induced
by an awareness of the inexor-
able functioning of the spiritual
law. An unknown poet of the
12th century, in winged words
of enduring beauty, thus envis-
ioned an era of universal amity
and peaceful cooperation:
