With American Jews contributing greater funds
to meet vastly enlarged rescue needs and opportuni-
ties, the year 5704 will go down in history as the
period of the most intensive activity in behalf of
saving the lives of large numbers of Jews in Europe,
of providing for the settlement of refugees and for
the reconstruction of the Jewish homeland in Pales-
tine, and of extending help to those finding a haven
in the United States. The beginning of 5705 will

mark the completion of five years of large-scale war
relief, rescue and rehabilitation supported by 41meri-
can Jews through the instrumentality of the 'United
Jewish Appeal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and
Palestine. Photos above show how the U.J.A. agencies
— the Joint Distribution Committee, the United
Palestine Appeal, and the National Refugee Serviro
— supported the battle for Jewish survival in danger
areas throughout the world.

who have broken the laws of

the civilized world will no longer

tion will we be faced with

of
man's assault upon the dignity of
man. Thus, the retribution that
will be justly meted out will
serve as a bulwark of human
morality."
With the assurance of Spani sh
Ambassador Juan Francisco de
Cardenas that Spain does not in-
tend to harbor Axis war crimin-
als, there are few places in the
world that scurrying rats c an
go. When
President Roosevelt,
just a year ago, issued tirm warn-
ing to neutral governments
against receiving Axis war crim-
inals as political refugees, both
Switzerland and Sweden were
sympathetic. Turkey
has since
joined the Allied camp, The fear
here, however, is that Argentina
will not be adverse to playing
host to escaping Hitlerites. It is
known that some Germans have
shipped ahead to that country
the wherewithal on which to live
and no doubt to plot a return
to power. The recent develop.
ments in Argentina suggest that
that country will even aid and
abet the plotting.
"Let those who have hitherto
not imbued
their hands with
innocent blood beware lest they
join the ranks of the guilty, for
most assuredly the three Allied
Powers (the United Kingdom,
the United States, and the Sov.
iet Union) will pursue them to
the uttermost ends of the earth
and will deliver them to their
accusers in order that justice
j
may be done." So spoke the Al-
lies after the Moscow conference
in Nov. 1943.

The major Nazi blunder, it is
felt here, was the Superman's
failure to cover his tracks at
Lublin. Even a cynical world,
virtually shock-proof after years
of more and more horrible atroc-
ity stories, was revolted and nau-
seated by the accounts of the
mass murder factory at the Maj-
danek camp—"the most terrible
place on the face of the earth"
in which, Soviet and Polish auth-
orities estimate, 1,500,000 per
sons were killed in the last three
years. One million of them were
Jews.
Those Americans who, far
from the scene of the terror in
Europe, had doubted the truth
of reports of mass murder, had
now the testimony of reliable
American newspaper correspond-
ents with no propaganda to serve.
The gas chambers, the furnaces
in which there were still bone
ashes, the skeletons of bodies not
yet burned when the Red Army
swept into Lublin, the mas3
graves, the stocks of clothing
taken from the bodies of the
dead; these remained as concrete
evidence of a most terrible
crime.
T he
German retreat could not,
for once, be called "according to
plan"; for they left behind the
proof that will condemn the guil-
ty. They left behind enough psy-
chological ammunition to combat
any denials of charges, to make
laughable any pleas for leniency.
It is to be hoped that an im-
mediate investigation will be con-
ducted in Poland, either by a
special United Nations commis-
sion or by the War Crimes Com-
mission which already exists. As
the American Jewish Committee
has pointed out: "The future
peace of the world will rest in
no small measure upon the speedy
and just punishment of those
