Life on its serious plane has always presented many
Detroit Jewish Chronicle
complexities and many problems. In this, our fifth year

of Second World War, life has become more heavily bur-
dened with many more problems, with many more needs.
As we approach this New Year of 5705, it behooves
us to discern and to select what needs immediate atten-
tion, what is our greatest need, what may redeem us
from our suffering and what is it that we must gain by
all these sacrifices of a world destroyed.
For American Jewry, the need is for a thorough
Jewish education for the next generation. All our prob-
lems, from anti-semitism to philanthrophy and traditional
observance, all these would melt away like snow in the
sun, were our children intensively prepared for Jewish
living.
We Jews will never solve the problem of anti-semi-
tism. You have never heard that the wishful thinking of
a man bitten by a mad dog will cure the dog. Anti-semi-
tism is a disease caused by mad Jew haters. What is
there that we, the victims, can do to eliminate them?
On the positive plane, the informed and observant Jew
can do much to mitigate the problem.
The extent of the ignorance of the average Jew as
to what is Judaism, is too appalling to be ignored. A
non-Jew asked a Jewish man, "What is the 'Simla' and
the meaning of `Shma Yisroel'?" and he did not know.
Is it not shameful that a man should not know of such
an essential concept—his own confession of faith?
Ignorance of Judaism also brings disgrace to the
Jew who violates his traditions and rituals. A very re-
fined non-Jew told me that he had lunch with a Jewish
man. Out of respect, he did not order meat, but the
Jewish man ordered ham. It must be puzzling to the
discerning non-Jew, how Jews who occupy themselves
with Judaism and Jewish institutions can disrespect Jew-
ish tradition publicly with "treifa" celebrations.
As to philanthrophy, surely a Jew who knows and
understands what is fundamental and creative in the
destiny of Judaism, gives freely for Palestine as well
as to all other Jewish causes.
The root of all our troubles lies in the utter ignor-
ance and hence disregard and disrespect of Judaism.
Let us, therefore, resolve to redeem the sacrifices,
the blood, and the lives of those who are fighting to
establish a better world. They must not have died in
vain.
Let us return to the true source of our ideals—tra-
ditional Judaism. Let us rear our children in homes
where the Sabbath, Dietary Laws, and family sanctities
are revered. Let us by all means, as parents, scrutinize
the type of Jewish education we give our children. Let
us provide, for our children, a thorough Jewish educa-
tion.

Rosh Hashonah Greetings!

The Halevy Singing Society
opened its 20th year of activity
on Tuesday evening, Sept. 15,
with a rehearsal at Roosevelt
School under the direction of
Dan Frohman. Except when holi-
days interfere, rehearsals will
take place every Tuesday eve-
ning.
President Eugene Franzblau
welcomed the members and an-
nounced plans for the 20th Jubi-
lee Concert to be presented on
Sunday evening, Feb. 4, in the
Scottish Rite auditorium of Ma-
sonic Temple. In keeping with
the nature of the occasion, the
Halevy will bring from New York
the popular radio and concert
baritone, Igor Gorin, to appear
as guest artist. The chorus will
sing several groups of numbers,
some new and some selected from
the most popular choral num-
bers in previous Halevy con-
certs.
With several other organiza-
tions, the Halevy participated in
a special Memorial program in
behalf of Pfc. Al Mogill, whose
;Accidental death occurred re-
cently. This program was given
on Monday, Sept. 11, in the Tay-
lor-Woodrow Wilson Synagogue.
Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Mogill,
parents of the deceased, his un-
cle, Cantor Samuel Mogill, and
his brother, Leo, were for many
years members of the Halevy.
