The Rescue Front on V-Day

By CARL ABRAMSON

EDITOR'S NOTE:—The following article on the major rescue
operations during the past year deals with the effect of the
latest war developments on the program for speeding the re-
habilitation of liberated Jews in Europe.

The curtain of darkness which
has shrouded the European con-
tinent for the past five years is
being quickly torn away by the
powerful hammer blows of the
Allied armies on every front. The
speedy deliverance of Paris, the
dramatic disintegration of the
Nazi e mpire in the Balkans and
the almost complete liberation of
Italy are breaking down the pris-
on walls built by the Nazis for
the Jews and other peoples in
Europe. With the beginning of
the New Year 5705, American
Jewry can see spread out before
it a new vista of hope for its fel-
low-Jews. Large-scale rescue aid
will be able to reach many thou-
sands who will be set free by
the United States to undertake
r ehabilitation and reconstruction
measures of sufficient scope to
end the despair and suffering of
those woh have lived on the brink
of death for more than a decade.
The day to day achievements
of American Jews on the rescue
front through the campaign of
the United Jewish Appeal for
Refugees, Overseas Needs and
Palestine have placed its constit-
uent agencies—the Joint Distri-
bution Committee, United Pales-
tine Appeal and National Refu-
gee Service—in a unique position
to deal efficiently with the great-
er needs of the period of libera-
tion and peace. We have only to
look at their record during the
past year to comprehend the ex-
tent to which their operations
have charted a course of prompt,
unified and well-coordinated serv-

ice to Jewish communities in the
lands from which the Nazis have
been driven.
One of the most significant de-
velopments on the rescue front
in 5704 was the establishment
early this year of the President's
War Refugee Board, composed of
the Secretaries of State, War
and the Treasury, for the pur-
pose of helping the victims of
Ilitlerism escape annihilation. Em-
ploying the diplomatic facilities
provided by the State Depart-
ment, the Board opened the doors
of rescue for large numbers of
Jews in the Balkans and the
Iberian peninsula. But after the
Board had opened the doors, it
became the responsibility of pri-
vate agencies, chiefly those repre-
sented in the United Jewish Ap-
peal to supply the necessary
funds to bring the homeless Jews
out of Europe and to settle them
in Palestine and the Western
Hemisphere. The Board's activi-
ties, which centered on Turkey
as the corridor of emigration to
Palestine for many thousands of
refugees, greatly taxed the facili-
tiies of the Joint Distribution
Committee, which provided the
transportation, and the United
Palesine Appeal, which arranged
for the adjustment and settle-
ment of the refugees following
their arrival in the Jewish home-
land. Through this combined ac-
tion more than 13,000 refugees
were brought into Palestine since
the beginning of the year 5704.
