levels than ever before.
Thitre are two wings in the
Catholic Church—a liberal and
a fascist one. By failing to fight
the fascist wing, we strengthen
its power over the liberal wing
within the fold of the Church
and leave the field wide open to
its fascistic and anti-Semitic de-
ments.
On the contrary, should it
come to a showdown with fascist
Catholics, a showdown which
may hurt the prestige of Catholi-
cism as a whole, it would
strengthen the cause of the lib-
eral Catholics because they
would be able to point out to
their own people that the Cath-
olic fascists help create an anti-
Catholic sentiment in this coun-
try.
For Jewish organizations to
denounce and condemn a Gentile
magazine—even if it should so-
licit Jewish support—solely be-
cause it attacks Catholic fascism,
and to employ red-baiting in the
process, is by no means a way
of combatting anti-Semitism but,
if anything, amounts to aiding
and abetting the anti-Semites.
And this is but one instance of
how the American Jewish Com-
mittee "combats" anti-Semitism.
It treats the symptoms and not
the disease, the disease which
has its roots in fascism, in the
backers of anti-Semitism, in the
higher-ups who are financing
American fascism. But far be it
from the American Jewish Com-
mittee to tackle these.
Purge these elements, and no
psychological research will be re-
quired.

PEACE

Pyrenees. After reaching Spain.
the father bid farewell to his
wife and daughter and turned
back to resume his fight for free-
dom on French soil. Crawling
through the darkness, he was
challenged by a guard. Capture
would mean cruel death at the
hands of the oppressor. He ig-
nored the command to halt. Sev-
eral ,shots were fired by the
guard. The father never re-
turned to the struggle for liber-
ation, but he had brought his
family to safety. And today the
little girl who has been helped
to enjoy a happy childhood in
the United States by the Nation-
ai Refugee Service still talks
proudly of her hero father not
knowing that he made the su-
preme sacrifice on the battle-
field of humanity.
The human equation, the joys
and sorrows of the men, women,
and children who have been res-
cued through the agencies of the
United Jewish Appeal—these in-
tangibles transcend in importance
the cold facts of the ledger of
life-saving and life-restoring ef-
fort supported by the Jews of
the United States. For these
refugees the New Year will mean
a new beginning and a new out-
look.
For all Jews in Nazi-dominated
Europe the New Year will bring
hope of liberation and restora-
tion. And the prospect of speedy
victory confronts the Jews of the
United States with a new re-
sponsibility — the responsibility
which we have been waiting to
welcome for more than 11 years
—of rebuilding the ruins of Jew-
ish life and of giving the home-
less and long-suffering of our
people every opportunity to share
the fruits of peace. In this and
many other respects this will
truly be a NEW Year.

The Story of Denver Sanatorium of the Jewish
Consumptives' Relief Society

Six days before Rosh Hash-
onah, 40 years ago, the Jewish
Consumptives' Relief Society ded-
icated six frail tents and a small
frame building, on a 20-acre plot
of land one mile from the Den-
ve• city limits, to the care of
men and women suffering from
tuberculosis, particularly the far
advanced cases who could find
no haven elsewhere. From such
humble beginnings, through the
generous support of the Jewish
people of America, the JCRS
rose to its present eminence as
an internationally famous insti-
tution for the care and treatment
of the tuberculosis poor.
To restore increasing numbers
of patients to health, in the
early years more and more tents
were erected, later to be re-
placed by modern hospital struc-
tures. Today the Sanatorium con-
sists of 34 buildings on 148 acres
of land—the largest institution
of its kind in the world.
Among the many unique fea-
tures of the JCRS are the Sani-
tarium School and the JCRS In-
dustries which play an important
part in the rehabilitation pro-
gram, and the Jaysee Dairy which
supplies all of the milk and cream
for the patients.
During the past four decades
of saving lives thousands of pati-
ents suffering from every stage
and form of tuberculosis have
received — absolutely free—the
finest of care and treatment in
this national, non-sectarian insti-
tution, and hundreds of examina-
tions and treatments have been
given in the Out-Patient Depart-
ment each year. Last year alone
84,062 hospital days of service
were rendered to patients who
came from 32 states, the District
of Columbia, Canada, Jamaica,
the Dutch West Indies, and the

The Follow-up Department of
the Sanatorium reports that of
the former patients from whom
answers to questionnaires were
received during the past year, 77
per cent are working full or part
time and 81 per cent are appar-
ently cured, arrested, or quies-
cent. This is particularly gratify-
ing as 75 per cent of the patients
admitted during the year were
far advanced, 17 per cent mod-
erately advanced, and only eight
per cent were minimal cases. The
percentage of minimal and mod-
erately advanced cases admitted
was higher than in previous
years. This is due to the fact
that patients came whose tuber-
culosis was diagnosed — earlier
than it might have been other-
wise—when they were examined
by draft board physicians and at
induction centers.
Dr. Philip Hillkowitz of Den-
