new spirit that will write off the
past as a nightmare best to be
forgotten, but for the lesson it

On the eve of the New Year,
the American Jewish Conference
sends its fraternal greetings to
the Jews of America and to all
Jews in every land.
The long night of Jewish hu-
miliation and suffering nears its
end. The lights of Freedom,
Equality and Fraternity are be-
ing rekindled in the darkened
areas of Europe, and once more
Jews are returning as free men
to the Capitals of Civilization,
that are being cleansed with fire
of the pollution of barbarism.
The tragedy of Jewish life wt.s
rendered insufferable not only by
reason of the shameful abuse of
the tormented body of the Jew-
ish people, but because of the
prolonged indifference to their
plight by the democratic world.

sight of Jewish liberation in lands
where only yesterday oppression
was the order of the day. Every
area occupied by the United Na-
tions brings the restoration of
Jewish rights and status, the re-
covery of equality, the ouster of
every remnant of the vile pur-
poses of Nuremberg. Every vic-
tory registers under the restored
symbols of Justice and Democ-
