darker pages of history than those
that were written since 1940
May the Jews of Holland, as well
as Jews everywhere who have
lived under the Hitler domina-
tion, meet the coming day in a
new spirit that will write off the
past as a nightmare best to be
forgotten, but for the lesson it
brough humanity.

On the eve of the New Year,
the American Jewish Conference
sends its fraternal greetings to
the Jews of America and to all
Jews in every land.
The long night of Jewish hu-
miliation and suffering nears its
end. The lights of Freedom,
Equality and Fraternity are be-
ing rekindled in the darkened
areas of Europe, and once more
Jews are returning as free men
to the Capitals of Civilization,
that are being cleansed with fire
of the pollution of barbarism.
The tragedy of Jewish life wt.s

reason of the shameful abuse of

prolonged indifference to their
plight by the democratic world.

lenged the barbarians to the ar-
bitrament of war, persisted in
avoiding consideration of Jewish

suffering; refraining from help
when help could be given; clos-
ing the doors of escape when es-
cape was still possible; and exer-

cising an ominous restraint in

giving any assurance to the Jew-

ish people as to their ulace in a
free world.
Today our hearts rejoice at the
sight of Jewish liberation in lands

where only yesterday oppression
was the order of the day. Every
area occupied by the United Na-
tions brings the restoration of
Jewish rights and status, the re-
covery of equality, the ouster of
every remnant of the vile pur-
poses of Nuremberg. Every vic-
