Other- wise, in the very near future, there may not be enough young physicians to succeed their sen- iors in Palestine and perhaps also in other countries. Both the University and Hadassah (its as- sociate in the Medical Center on Mount Scopus) are keenly alive to this situation. Special com- mittees have accordingly been appointed to consider the scope of the undertaking and to for- mulate plans for the establish- ment of a Medical School. people. To carry on this work effectively, we must have civil servants who will be well trained, Jewishly educated, and competent to mould the future of our peo- ple with statesmanlike wisdom. With the above in mind the University authorities are pre- paring plans for two major un- dertakings, both of considerable urgency. One may well say of the Heb- rew University that it has a ren- dezvous with destiny—it is root- ed in the traditions of our peo- ple, and shall endure as long as our people shall endure. After all the current emergencies of the day will have vanished, all those things for which Hebrew University stands will persist. There will always be need for the Hebrew University. Let us hope that the Hebrew University will be able to meet the need to an ever-increasing degree. NEW YEAR (Continued from Page 8) men and women in the armed forces who, as they live and fight together with Americans of othei . religions and racial groups, are learning to respect one another. Likewise, thousands of chaplains are learning new ways of work- ing with chaplains of other faiths. These men and Their chaplains are the American lead- ers of tomorrow. What a power for good they will be! Readers of this article may assume that the writer is over- optimistic. Our only point is that American leaders in all walks of life are facing in new directions in terms of education f or improved human relations. This is only the beginning. It is not an accomplished fact. But beginnings are important and it is significant that they are tak- ing directions which will last on into future years and genera- tions. They do not comprise a m o m e n t a r y propaganda cam- paign; they are an integral part of the whole educational struc- ture of the nation. As such, they cannot fail, if they are support- ed by the majority of citizens who want a land of liberty and justice for all. There will be rough days ahead, without question, for ex- ample, in the area of Negro- white relations. The period of reconversion will offer opportuni- ties for hatreds to thrive. Our native demagogues will attempt to secure a following. But the developments outlined above, if supplemented by political integ- rity and economic stability, will enable America to survive these stresses and strains and take her rightful place in a world society. Certainly without them, our be- loved land would be greatly en- 9 dangered.
