A HAPPIER NEW YEAR -:-
By WILLARD JOHNSON

of Christians and Jews
The year 5705 will be a hap- assuming more and more of their

intolerance will not be reduced
merely by protesting against it
or even by meeting it head-on.
They are now employing proven
educational procedures, in a posi-
tive way, to build understandings
and mutual respect based on
knowledge and cooperative en-
deavors.
During the past year, 40 Prot-
estant denominational boards
have devoted an entire year to
study of the topic, "The Church
and America's Peoples." Educa-
tional materials, hard-hitting yet
positive in nature, were used by
church people at all age levels
and continuously for the year.
They were used in all sections of
the nation and in small as well
as large communities. Special
sections were devoted to the
major religious and racial groups
comprising the country and Chris-
tians were summoned to make
America actually a land of lib-
erty and justice for all. The ma-
terials will continue to be used
in years ahead.
In addition, the major denom-
inations of the nation, with very
few exceptions, included within
their religious educational pro-
grams special materials devoted
to racial and religious amity and
understanding. Special national
commissions were appointed by
ninny bodies to give comprehen-
sive attention to this subject
which now is an established part
of religious education of Amer-
ica. Scores of youth conferences
held during summer vacation
periods included the topic in
their agenda, often with rabbis
teaching classes and leading for-
ums.
A comparable development
took place within the Catholic
Church. The Commission on
American Citizenship appointed
by the hierarchy in 1937, includ-
ing both Protestants and Jews on
its board as well as Catholics,
this last year published the first
six volumes of its "Faith and
Freedom Readers" for parochial
schools. Interwoven in the citi-
zenship materials of these attrac-
tive volumes are superior sec-
tions devoted in inter-religious
and inter-racial amity and re-
spect. In the Seventh reader, for
example, is a section on "Com-
mon Aims of Protestants, Catho-
lics and Jews." Already more
than half the parochial schools of
the land have adopted the books
as standard materials.
Following the lead of Pope
Pius XII in calling on Catholics
to work with "all men of good
will," many American Catholic
leaders have given increased col-
laboration. The Jesuit order has
given major attention to inter-
creedal cooperation. Archbishop
Robert E. Lucey and the six
other bishops in Texas and Okla-
home issued a public statement
commending the objectives of
the National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews.
There are, of course, both
