A MYSTERIOUS CURE FOR ANTI-SEMITISM

THE EDITOR:—The author of this article is the daily columnist
of the "New York Day" and one of America's most distin-
guished Jewish journalists. Mr. Goldberg is the son-in-law of
the immortal Sholem Aleichem.
I read about the conference of
experts held underthe aegis
of the American Jewish Commit-
tee in a New York hotel. These
experts numbered psychologists,
sociologists and public relations
men, and the conclave devoted
its labors to an attempt to find
w ays and means for combatting
a nti-Semitism.
The conferees very conscien-
tiously psychoanalyzed the causes
and motives which make one in-
dividual or another turn anti-
Semite. They also made an ex-
haustive study of the technique
and methods employed by the
anti-Semites of today. But--
when it came to the gist of the
matter, to the question of com-
batting the menace—the learned
pundits were transformed into
so many pre-medical tyros, and
their "expert" diagnosis resulted
in a prescription compounded of
very ineffectual ingredients.
The Nazis pour satire and
mockery upon the Jews. Well,
then, the anti-Semites, too, must
be made the butt of ridicule of
the anti-anti-Semitic literature.
Not so much the mind as the
emotions must be appealed to,
and books on how to do it crowd
the shelves of promoters and pub-
licity wizards. Too, don't always
picture the Jew as an object of
pity, a downtrodden, insulted,
helpless victim—this will make
people anything but respect him.
On the contrary, it may do him
harm. Picture him, therefore, as
a heroic, fighting, self-respecting
soul, advised one of the profes-
sors.
Sound advice, isn't it? No
gainsaying it, to be sure. And
yet, should one take the good
professor's suggestion seriously

and keep "depicting" till dooms-

with anti-Semitism?
Anti-Semitism has been a well--
going, dividend earning concern
for over 2,500 years. Anti-anti-
Semitism is almost as old, but
has not brought in a red cent
in profits to this day.
The entire Jewish apologetic
literature, from ancient Greece to
our own times, can be summed
up in the proverbial admonition,
say, to a drug addict: "Shame
on you!, Mr. Addict!" It is not
recorded, however, that this or
any other admonition has ever
cured the addict from his habit
or made him show signs of re-
morse.
It seems to me, the American
Jewish Committee would have ac-
complished much more had it
brought together not psychia-
trists and sociologists, but busi-
ness men and lawyers, instead.
Had these two groups of experts
made up their minds to find out
how anti-Semitism in America is
being financed and to what ex-
tent this financing is legal, if at
all, there would 'tie much less
need of supporting any anti-anti-
Semitic movements in this coun-
try.
In the inner sanctums of their
Wall Street offices, the directors
of the American Jewish Commit-
tee know only too well that
"money talks" and that its lan-
guage is quite a bit of psychic
realism. Nevertheless, when it
collies to anti-Semitism, they pre-
fer to seek in it the abstract,
the purely "psychological," the
exclusively "spiritual."

1 can think of only one reason
why Coughlin has not been made
to stand trial—it might reflect
on the Catholic Church, and the
American Jewish Committee is
very circumspect where the good
name of the Catholic Church is
at stake.
There is an American month-
ly, The Protestant, with a large
circulation among the Protestant
clergy. These ministers are flood-
ed with anti-Semitic literature.
As an antidote, they also receive
a magazine which combats anti-
Semitism in a most militant man-
ner. Every issue of The Protest-
ant is full to the brim of anti-
anti-Semitic articles.
And, sure enough, the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee has come
out in the open with a denuncia-
tion of The Protestant.
Why is it a matter of life and
death to the American Jewish
Committee to combat The Pro-
testant?
Because, the Committee al-
leges, the magazine follows the
Communist "party line." I do
not know whether it does or
