The leaflets called Wurfel an Austrian Jew and urged the population to end the "Jewish provocations of the new food director." Following the appearance of the leaflets, the Jewish commun- ity issued a statement that Wur- fel was not a Jew, a fact con- firmed by government records. Liberal political groups here, and President Ibarra, who upon as- sumption of office last May lashed the Ecuador anti-Semites, are ex- pected to take measures to count- eract the effect of the leaflets on the population.
