New Year's Greetings to All From Michigan Communities

French Patriots Rescue Forty Jewish
Children from the Hands of the Gestapo

GENEVA (WNS)—Forty Jew-
ish refugee children, who were
rescued from the hands of the
Gestapo by the Interior French
Forces in the liberated French
town of Annemass, on the
Franco-Swiss frontier, arrived in
Switzerland this week where they
will be sheltered for the duration
of the war.
The story of the rescue of the
Jewish c hildren by French pat-
riots goes back to the month of
May, when the French under-
ground movement learned that
the Gestapo was planning to de-
port the young Jewish victims

to extermination camps in Poland.
The French underground there-
upon decided to transfer all the
Jewish children to Annemasse
and to subsequently smuggle
them into Switzerland. When the
patriots reached the town they.
and the children, were arrested
by the Gestapo. With the rescue
plan frustrated, the French pat-
riots entered negotiations with
the Gestapo to exchange the chil-
dren for German prisoners that
were held by the Maquis. The
offer was rejected by the Ger-
mans. When the Maquis cap-
tured Annemasse they liberated
all the children and sent them
across the border to Switzerland.
When the children reached
Switzerland they were received
by official representatives of the
Swiss Government and by rep-
t esentatives of the Jewish Youth
Organization in Switzerland. The
departure of the children from
Annemasse was marked by a spe-
cial ceremony at the Municipal
Square. Leaders of the Interior
French Forces and Mayor Def-
foot delivered farewell addresses
in which they stressed that no
differences existed in France

would remain faithful to its tra-
ditions of freedom, equality and
democracy. When the ceremony
was completed, the children were
handed over to a delegation of
Jewish rescue officials which had
arrived from Switzerland to An-
nemasse. As the children crossed
the Franco-Swiss frontier mobs
of Frenchmen sang the Marseil-
laise.

Letter to The Editor

To the Editor:
I am writing this in protest
to a world which seeks to be
gallant to a people who produce
monsters like Hitler and his gang.
I have just read the article by
W. II. Lawrence who saw with
his own eyes the unholy site of
the most horrible mass-torture
methods ever conceived by man.
I say the Germans deserve no
mercy, no matter how much they
howl for it; just as they showed
no mercy to those poor, inno-
cent people they put to death.
Perhaps the average German
feels lie has no hand in this
crime, not having actually par-
ticipated in this orgy of death.
Oh, but they are! Any German
who did not actively do his best
to destroy the Nazi element
through the underground or oth-
er methods, is indeed just as
guilty, or more so, for having
tolerated these crimes.
It has been shown countless
times before in history, that when
a majority of the people in a
country do not like the govern-
ment they have, they eliminate
it even if it takes years and the
violence of revolution to do it.
I can only assume that the ma-
jority of German people were
indeed in favor of the Nazi gov-
ernment or else there certainly
would have been revolution in
Germany when the first concen-
tration camp was made by Hitler.
They will tell us, as an excuse
for their toleration of Hitler,
that they were hungry and Hit-
ler offered them food. Could
they be so blind as not to see,
after the first year or so of the
Hitler regime, that they were
feeding on the blood of innocent
people; climbing by trampling on
the ever-increasing pile of their
victims?
No, their crime was not one
against the Jews alone, but
against all of humanity and may-
be God and our government can,
but I can't forgive them.
Miss Birdie Kutzen.
