taken now at the office on Dexter Beth Yehudah. She comes to
and Cortland (HOgarth 7990) this city from Chicago and is the

at the two branches functioning training was received at Moriah

director of youth groups.
Study Published
Dr. Huga Mandelbaum, super-
visor of the preparatory classes
at Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, is
the author of a novel method
for the study of Chumash and
Hebrew grammar, developed dur-
ing the three years of his teach-
ing at the school. One volume
of the book, entitled "Root and
Branch," has just been issued by
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah for dis-
tribution to students here and
in other schools throughout the
country. It aims to give, in sim-
ple form, the essential rules of
Hebrew grammar and Bible syn-
tax, thus making it possible to
begin the study of the Five Books
of Moses after a brief introduc-
tory course in the elements of
reading and writing, the Siddur
and religious practices.
One of the essential contribu-
tions of Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
to Hebrew education in Detroit
has been the effective develop-
ment of this method in its pre-
paratory classes which lead di-
rectly to the Yeshivah depart-
ment where advanced courses are
given in Bible, Talmud, religious
law, and Jewish ethics.
The new text book is based
upon the principle of self-study
which governs the educational
procedure at Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah. Pupils are encouraged
to work out the meaning of the
sacred text by themselves, after
being given the necessary tools.
Directors to Meet
Yeshivath Beth Yehudah was
founded in 1917 by the late Rab-
bi Yehudah Leib Levin, spiritual
head of the orthodox congrega-
tions in this city. The school was
subsequently named for him. It
now enters upon the 27th year
of uninterrupted operation and is
maintained by the community at
large. The board of directors
and its educational committee
comprised of the rabbis and lay
representatives of all traditional
synagogues in Detroit. A review
of the educational and financial
situation of the Yeshivah, and
plans for Fall activity, are on
the agenda of the Board meeting
to be held next Monday evening,
Aug. 28, at the Yeshivah Bldg.
