Hadassah Cables $100,000 to Youth Aliyah to
Settle Hungarian Jewish Children in Palestine

NEW YORK.—Responding to
the statement of Regent Horthy
that Hungary is willing to re-
lease Jewish children under 10
years of age if certificates for
emigration to other countries are
a vailable. the National Board of
Hadassah , the Women's Zionist
Organization of America, official
representative in America of the
Youth Aliyah (immigration)
movement which since 1934 has
rescued more than 11,000 Jewish
boys and girls from Europe and
settled them in Palestine, today
cabled $100,000 to Henrietta
Szold, chairman of Youth Aliyah
in Jerusalem, to be held in es-
crow, pending the arrival in Pal-
estine of the first group of Hun-
garian children. In a telegram
informing John W. Pehle of the
War Refugee Board, of Hadas-
sah's action. Mrs. Gisela War-
burg Wyzanski, American chair-
man of Youth Aliyah, expressed
its gratitude in learning that the
board is formulating plans to
implement the Horthy offer by
securing havens for the children.
Mrs. Wyzanski pointed out that
Palestine will probably loom
large in the picture as a place
of refuge, since the government
of Great Britain allocated sev-
eral thousand immigration certifi-
cates for East European children
some time ago.
During the present calendar
year, Hadassah has sent $952,650
to the Youth Aliyah committee
in Jerusalem which in addition
receives money from Jewish
groups in all the free countries
of the world. The $100,000 just
sent is in addition to these funds.
Express Appreciation
The National Board of Hadas-
sah also expressed its apprecia-
tion to the War Refugee Board
at the reported establishment in
Turkey of a rescue board to fa-

Pope to Recognize
Jewish State in Palestine

LONDON (WNS) — If the
forthcoming peace conference de-
cides to establish a Jewish State
in Palestine it will receive diplo-
matic recognition from Pope Pius
XII, according to a report trans-
mitted here from Vatican City
by the French Independent News
Agency.
According to the report, the
Pope made the statement in an
audience he had last week with
Field Marshal Viscount Gort, the
new High Commissioner for Pal-
estine.
Asserting that "the Vatican
will keep strict neutrality with
regard to the Palestine question
and will accept as an accom-
plished fact any decision taken
on this matter by the members
of the peace conference," the re-
port added:
"The Pope is animated by
great sympathy for the Jews and
does not intend to interfere with
the realization of their aspira-
tions for a national state of their
own. At the same time, how-
ever, he believes that Catholic
Arabs must not be discontented.

reads as follows:
"Mr. John W. Pehle,

The National Board of Hadas-
sah assembled in meeting wel-
comes the statement as reported
in the press that the War Refu-
gee Board is formulating plans
for implementing Regent Horthy's
offer to the International Red
Cross to release all Jewish chil-
dren under 10 who can obtain
foreign visas. Since many of
these children will undoubtedly
find refuge in Palestine, Hadas-
sah has cabled $100,000 to Miss
Henrietta Szold, chairman of the
Youth Aliyah (immigration)
movement in Jerusalem, asking
that the money be held in escrow
until the arrival of the first group
of Hungarian children. We are
grateful for the efforts of the
War Refugee Board and wish to
be as helpful as we can under
the circumstances.

Dean Alfange Quits Emergency Committee
to Save the Jewish People of Europe

NEW YORK (WNS) — In a
statement announcing his resig-
nation as co-chairman of the
Emergency Committee to Save
the Jewish People of Europe, the
noted leader of the American
Liberal Party, Dean Alfange, de-
clared that he is "a firm believer
in the political aims of Zionism
as exemplified by the World Zion-
ist movement headed by Dr.
Chaim Weizmann."
Following is the complete text
of Dean Alfange's statement:
"While I fully sympathize with
the humanitarian purposes of

litical affiliations. Though I am
a Christian, I have been a life-
long Zionist and a firm believer
in the political trims of Zionism
as exemplified by the World
Zionist movement headed by Dr.
Chaim Weizmann.
"I believe that the most effec-
tive way of eradicating anti-
Semitism is by creating an inde-
pendent Jewish state in Pales-
tine through which the Jewish
people can express themselves on
equal terms with the other peo-
ples of the world.
"Lack of statehood implies lack
of equality which, in turn, leads
to world - wide discrimination.
Zionism is therefore the means
of attacking anti-Semitism at its
source and should be supported
by all liberal thinking citizens,
Irrespective of their faith."
