AMERICAN JEWISH CONGRESS BUREAU
TRACES REFUGEE JEWS IN LIBERATED AREAS
Jews of Chicago and the mid-
west region are now able to trace
their refugee relatives in liber-
ated areas of Europe through a
special service provided by the
Chicago Division of the American
Jewish Congress.
What is virtually an "inter-
national bureau of missing per-
sons has been set up by the Con-
gress office under the direction
of Frederick C. White, executive
director of the Chicago Division
in its headquarters at 8 South
Dearborn St. There, scores of
m en and women daily pore over
bound files of mimeographed
names sent out from Moscow, in
hopes of finding out about their
unfortunate relatives who be-
came the first victims of Nazi
terror in Romania, Poland, Lith-
uania, Latvia and Estonia.
To date more than 300 Chicago
Jews are happier, because at last
they have located their long-lost
relatives, who are alive and safe
in Russia.
The Congress office in Chicago
receives the names of 2,000 such
Intergovernmental Comm.
on Refugees to Meet
LONDON (WNS) — The first
plenary session of the Inter-
governmental Committee on Ref-
agees since its reorganization
will be held here this month. It
is believed in well informed cir-
cles that the conference was
spurred by the mounting possi-
bilities of accomplishing the res-
cue of the Jews in Hungary and
in other countries in Nazi-occu-
pied Europe. The session may
devote a good deal of its time
to exploring possibilities of res-
cuing the children in Hungary
whom Regent Horthy offered to
release if visas can be obtained
for them to reception countries.
Jews each month from the Jew-
ish Community Council of Mos-
cow, which cooperates with the
Worid and American Jewish Con-
gresses in helping American
Jews to become reunited with
loved ones.
Requests for information from
communities outside Chicago are
handled through the office of the
Midwest Region of the American
Jewish Congress and should be
addressed to the regional direct-
or, Rabbi Asher T. Katz, 8 South
Dearborn St. In writing for this
service, vital facts should be
stated, including the name, age,
occupation, place of birth, and
last known address, to facilitate
identification.
Labor Party Triumphs
in Palestine Jewish
Assembly Elections
JERUSALEM (WNS) — Of
the approximately 200,000 per-
sons who voted in the elections
this week to the Assefath Haniv-
charim, the Jewish National As-
sembly of Palestine, 42 per cent
cast their ballots for the Pales-
tine Labor Party, according to
early tabulatons.
Thirteen years ago, the last
time elections were held to the
Assembly, only 56 per cent of
the persons entitled to vote went
to the polls, while this week
more than 72 per cent of the
entitled voters cast their ballots.
Early election counts indicate
that the Labor Party will get
65 seats in the Assembly, the
Mizrachi and its labor branch,
Hapoel Hamizrachi, 24 seats,
Aliyah Chadassah, 18 seats, the
Labor Unity Party, 12 seats,
Zionist Group "A," 5 seats, Ha-
zioni 7 seats and the Women's
Zionist Organization 4 seats.

To Unearth Jewish
Literary and Artistic
Treasures in Vilna
MOSCOW (WNS)--The story
of how a number of Jews who
remained in Vilna under its Nazi
occupation saved rare Jewish
manuscripts, artistic treasures,
paintings and incunabula by
burying them under the ground,
was told here this week by the
Yiddish poet Abraham Sutskever.
Mr. Sutskever, who spent more
than two years in the Vilna
ghetto, disclosed that when he
and several other Jews were
forced by the Germans to work
in the libraries and museums
they were looting they conceived
of a elan to save as many of the
Jewish treasures as possible. The
plan was a dangerous one. To be
caught meant one's life. Bw
the fearless group, he said, used
every opportunity to steal what-
ever manuscripts, letters, paint-
ings, antiques, rare books and
other useful literary and cultural
paraphernalia they could lay
their hands on. These they hid
under the ground in and around
Vilna, and to make sure they
would recognize the places they
marked them. On one occasion
they stole three trunkloads of
loot from the Smolensk museum.
The loot was loaded at the rail-
way station in Vilna.
Mr. Sutskever is expected to
return soon to Vilna, where with
the aid of Russian officials, he
will unearth all the hidden treas-
ures.
Pro-Zionist Planks in
Platforms of U.S. Political
Parties Worry Arabs
CAIRO (WNS) — Much con-
cern is expressed in Arab cir-
cles here over the inclusion in
the platforms of the Democratic
and Republican parties in the
United States of planks favoring
the establishment of a Jewish
commonwealth in Palestine.
Some Arab leaders, who are
here in connection with the forth-
coming pan-Arab unity confer-
ence in Alexandria, have private-
ly expressed the opinion that the
inclusion of pro-Zionist planks
in the platforms of the two maj-
or political parties have virtually
blasted all Arab hopes. Al Ahar-
am, one of the leading newspap-
ers here, this week carried an
editorial charging the Jews in
America had coerced the politi-
cal parties into adopting Jewish
Pro-Palestine demands. "T h e
Democrats and the Republicans
in the United States," it said,
"are now competing with each
other in praclaiming their sup-
port for Zionism."

Hillel Foundations
Cancel Leadership
Training Institute
CHAMPAIGN, ILL.—The first
national Bnai Brith Hillel Lead-
ership Training Institute, which
was to have been held at Camp
Onibar on Lake Como, Wayne
County, Pa., from Sept. 1-10, has
been cancelled in compliance with
the request of the Office of De-
fense Transportation to make
available all possible transporta-
tion facilities for war purposes,
it was announced by Dr. A. L.
Sachar, national director of the
Bnai Brith Hillel Foundations.
The Institute was to have
brought together Hillel directors,
students, both Christian and Jew-
ish, as well its leading Jewish
thinkers for 10 days of consid-
eration of the manifold problems
facing the Jewish community in
general and college students in
particular. Plans for the Insti-
tute have not been dropped be-
cause it is expected the Institute
may be held in the spring if
transportation difficulties ease up.
Jewish Industrialist in
Bolivia Feared Kidnapped
BUENOS AIRES (WNS)—The
mysterious disappearance last
week in Bolivia of Maurice Hoch-
schild, wealthy Argentine indus-
trialist, has all the earmarks of
a kidnapping, it was announced
by the Argentine Foreign Minis-
try following the receipts of offi-
cial information from the police
prefect of La Paz, Bolivia.
The 62-year-old Hochschild is
an Argentine citizen of German
origin. He settled in Bolivia in
1923, where he owns large tin,
zinc and wolfram mines. On the
day he disappeared he was to
have gotten a passport to Chili.
But he never reached the Chil-
ean consulate. His private auto-
mobile was found empty near
the home of the Chilean com-
mercial attache.
Three months ago Hochschild
was arrested in Bolivia on charges
of heading a plot to overthrow
Villaroel's Government. After
being held by the police for one
month, he was released when it
was established that he was inno-
cent.
