THE NINTH OF AB T'BAV, IN HUNGARY

By RABBI MOSES FISCHER

In one of his most pathetic
poems, Frug, the great Yiddish
and Russian poet tells us how a
father, asked by his inquisitive,
dreamy-eyed son as to the time
when the much expected Re-
deemer, the Messiah, will arrive,
answered the question of his son
with the legend: "That there
is a bottomless cup suspended
before the Lord, into which the
tears so richly shed by Israel in
all its temporary habitations dur-
ing the long course of its exile
are gathered; when this ground-
less and bottomless cup of Jew-
ish tears will over-run with the
precious sold-blood — then the
time for the advent of the Mes-
siah has certainly come, as even
the bottomless cup of God—and
be it as deep and fathomless as
the ocean, must certainly over-
flow from the ocean of blood and
tears shed by Israel in the last
decade.
There is a Kabbalistic notion
that at each important turn of
human history, as often as new
world-redeeming ideas and ideals,
are born and struggle for self-
expression in human life, that
in all such historic moments al-
ternately another group, another
branch of World-Jewry is called
to bear witness to the truth and
saving force of these world-re-
deeming ideals by assuming mar-
tyrdom and persecution for their
realization. It seems that our
times are exceptions even along
these lines. It is not ONE
branch of Jewry alone—it is as
if the great majority of dispersed
and scattered Israel would be
called to . ascend the mountain
peak of suffering and martyrdom
in order to participate in the
preliminary Messainic work to
free mankind from the rule and
sway of tyrants and despots, to
set them from the eternal fear
of ever-returning human holo-
causts and fratricidal wars. It
seems that in this succession of
the various Jewrys of the world,
the hour has arrived for Hun-
garian Jewry to mount the peak
of self-sacrificial suffering for
the iniquities of mankind, to tes-
tify for the ultimate triumph of
justice and righteousness, and
to bear witness for the imper-
ishability and industructibility of
Israel.
The prophet of the exile, Ezek-
iel— contemporary of Jeremiah—
beheld in one of his visions "a
slain, gigantic body." What oth-
er metaphor and simile could do
justice to the present catastroph-
ic state of Hungarian Jewry,
than this phrase of the prophet;

"a slain gigantic body!" 900,000
God-fearing, law-abiding but erst-
while free and respected Jewish
citizens of Hungary! More than
100,000 of them were slain with
immediate physical death by
speeding them in jammed cattle-
wagons into the lethal chambers
of Poland and Bohemia. In re-
gard to other hundreds of thou-
sands of them, the words of
Jeremiah can be applied, "Bet-
ter were those who fell through
the sword than those that die
by slow hunger and starvation."
Deprived . of elemental human
rights, placed beyond the pale
and protection of law, robbed of
their possessions acquired by the
sweat and toil of decades, the
members of their families torn
from each other like the
wrenched limbs of a body; hunt-
ed, outlawed, and insulted, etc.!
How tame, mild, seems to be the
Biblical command, "Thou shalt
not kill," compared to the ter-
rible crime and enormity of the
mass murders — physical, more.,
and legal—committed by whole
peoples against whole peoples in
our enlightened days! At the
first instance of murder—related
in the Bible—both the blood of
the innocent victim, and the earth
that had absorbed the blood cried
to the heaven—how should heav-
en and earth be shaken, what
tremulous convulsions should pass
through their gates as the blood
of millions of innocently killed
Jews cry to the heavens for jus-
tice, for vengeance, and retribu-
tion!
In the seventies of the last cen-
tury, carried away by the grant-
ing of rights of citizenship and
equality to them by the powers
that be, the rich assimilated Jews
of Hungary, and a part of its
intellegencia, following the trend
of Western Europe, declared pub-
licly, "Budapest is our Zion, and
the Danube our Jordan." In an-
swer to this slogan of the weal-
thy and intellectual elements, one
of the famous Rabbis of Hungary
has countered with the slogan,
"If Hungary be our Zion—it is
a small Zion, and a great Baby-
lon." Unfortunately the predic-
tion of the great Rabbi became
only too true. Hungary not
alone has become a great Baby-
lon, but it became a great Ger-
many! Its quislings to do their
utmost—if possible—to out-do in
atrocities, cruelties, and depreda-
tions, even their German models
and masters.
History repeats itself! In the
days of Antiochus, the Greeks
housed pigs in the Sanctuary of
Jerusalem in order to defile the
same. In our days, the Hungar-
ians have quartered the Gestapo
in the main Synagogue of Buda-
pest in the Toback Street called
also
the Jewish Cathedral. Apol-

big the Gestapo to them.
"In the seat of righteousne

This observation of Kohelestn
was never more forcefully dem-
onstrated than in the mentioned
episode in Budapest. For more
than a century, righteousness has
ruled there. The ever recurring
and returning subject of its pul-
pit were: Righteousness, Broth-
erly Love, Mercy and Charity,
the universal elements of our
faith! The very walls of the
Synagogue, its very stones must
yet resound and reverberate
the teachings and preachings of
righteousness toward all our fel-
low men without difference of
"creed, race, and nationality."
In this very Temple of right-
eousness, the swish of whips and
lashes, the agonized cry and
sigh of the victims of the Ges-
tapo is heard day and night.
Where the voice of Jacob, the
lofty teachings of Judaism were
heard, there the hand of Esaus
execute with uncurbed cruelty,
and beastial vandalism and sad-
ism on the bodies of erstwhile
worshippers of the Synagogue.
Right opposite to this palatial,
imposing Synagogue is a modest,
antiquate d, half delapidated
house, the only ornament, of
which is a memorial tablet with
the inscription, "In this house
was born Dr. Theodore Herzl."
For decades a violent struggle
was going on between the rich
Parnosim and eloquent Rabbis of
the Synagogue, and Dr. Herzl-
for the soul of Hungarian Jew-
ry. The Synagogue stood for
hundred per cent patriotism, for
the perfect assimilation of Hun-
garian Jewry in national and
political sense. The leaders and
the Rabbis were convinced if
they but embrace totalitarian
Hungarian nationalism, if they
confine and limit Judaism only
to Faith and Religion—they will
secure and assure for all times
to come the well-being freedom
and equal rights of Hungarian
Jewry. The great man, born in
the opposite, humble house, in
contrast to it had warned and
forewarned Hungarian Jewry that
they shall not depend and rely
on Princes, not put their trust
and confidence in paper constitu-
tions and laws which were exact-
ed willingly or unwillingly from
the Magyars by the spirit of the
times. He made with prophetic
foresight the prediction that if
Anti-Semitism will one day find
its way into Hungary—its orgies
and outrages, its cruelty, ruth-
lessness, and sadism will make
the excesses committed against
the Jews in other countries ap-
pear normal and small. Dr. Herzl
had unfortunately once more pre-
dicted correctly. I wonder what
the Synagogue and the birth-
home of Dr. Herzl whisper to
each other in the silence and soli-
tude of the night, what stories
and what "Ifs" they tell each
other with the wail and fierce cry
of the Gestapo-victims reaching
them!
According to an old legend,
quoted by Heine, "The stones of
the wailing wall sweat tears, and
cry aloud on Tisha-B'Av . . .
Even stoney hearts—if they are
not replaced utterly by another
organ—must bewail and lament
the catastrophy and tragedy of
Jewry on this Tisha-B'Av . . .
Alas! My people, my blood, my
nation." Alas!

BRITAIN ASKED TO RESCIND PROMISE OF
JEWISH NATIONAL HOME IN PALESTINE

JERUSALEM (WNS) — The
Palestine Arab Party here last
week issued a manifesto calling
on the British Government to re-
scind its pledge, contained in the
Balfour Declaration, for a Jew-
ish National Home in Palestine.
The timing of the demand was

Nazis Send Hungarian
Jewish Industrialists
To Concentration Camp

BERNE (WNS)—The "biggest
Jewish industrialists" in Hun-
gary, Baron Andreas Hatvany,
has been deported by the Ger-
mans to a concentration camp for
allegedly failing to register his
property with the authorities ur.-
der the Aryan laws, it was dis-
closed here this week with the
arrival of newspapers from Bud-
apest.
Baron Ilatvany, two of whose
sisters are living in the United
States, was reported to have
been in hiding since the middle
of March. The Hungarian news-
papers failed to state where he
was found at the time of his
arrest. The Hatvany family has
been prominent in Hungarian
political, social, industrial and
economic life since the middle of
the 19th century.
One Hungarian newspaper
quoted Bel Intredi, the former
Hungarian Premier who resigned
when it was discovered that he
had Jewish blood, as saying that
"contrary to rumors abroad not
a drop of Jewish blood had
soiled the hands of the authori-
ties." Imredi, now an official of
the pro-Nazi Sztojay government,
was recently niade an "Aryan"
by a special ruling of the Nazi
authorities in Hungary.

Hungary "Suspends"
Deportation of Jews

BERNE (WNS)—The Interna-
tional Red Cross headquarters
here disclosed last week, in a
special communique, that it has
been officially informed that the
deportation of Hungarian Jews
had been "suspended." The
statement revealed that the move
was the result of "energetic ac-
tion" taken by the International
Red Cross with Admiral Nicholas
Horthy, Regent of Hungary, and
the Hungarian Government.
The International Red Cross
committee has been authorized,
after lengthy and intensive nego-
tiations, to aid "interned or oth-
erwise confined Israelites" under
a new agreement, and to collab-
orate in the eventual evacuation
of children up to the age of 10
years who have received visas
of entry to countries of asylum .
The statement added that the
Red Cross had succeeded in ob-
taining unrestricted transit
through Axis-controlled countries
for all Jewish refugees possess-
ing visas for Palestine.

believed to have been prompted
by a desire to impress the con-
ferees at the projected Arab
meeting at Cairo, where the ques•
Lion of a pan-Arab federation will
be discussed. Palestine Arab
leaders had not been invited t4
the Cairo conference, to be held
either early this or late next
month, because the various Arab
parties had not been able to
unite on a delegation satisfactory
to all factions.
The manifesto, calling for the
establishment of an independent
Arab State in Palestine to be
affiliated with the projected Arab
federation. was issued simultan-
eously with a report that the ex-
tremist Palestine Arab leader
Auni Bey Abdul Hadi was pre-
paring to leave for Cairo. While
nothing was said whether his
trip was in any way related to
the forthcoming Arab confer-
ence at Cairo, the fact that he
will be in Cairo when the meet.
ing is to be held indicates that
his mission has political signifi-
cance.
Simultaneously it was report-
ed here that the Premier of
Transjordania, Tewfik Abu Hoda
Pasha, had declared at a press
conference in Cairo that Jewish
immigration to Transjordan is
not now, nor ever will be, coun-
tenanced by the Transjordan
Government. The Premier, in
what was evidently intended a s
a reply to the Palestine Arab
news magazine Akhersaa which
alleged last week that Transjor-
dia had been considering plans
to admit Jewish immigrants, as-
serted that his government had
never agreed to open parts of
Transjordania to Jewish immigra-
tion. His statement reads:
"The Trans-Jordinians' atti-
tude toward the Zionists and the
suggested establishment of a
Jewish state west of the Jordan
River has always been clear. We
support Palestine in her effort
to remain an Arab country. If
this is our attitude toward Pal-
estine, obviously our attitude
toward any suggestion that Jew-
ish immigrants should be allowed
to settle here is even more defi-
nite."

Responsibility for Bombing
Headquarters of Jerusalem
Police Admitted by Irgun

TEL AVIV (WNS—The out-
lawed Jewish terrorist organiza-
tion Irgun Zavi Leumi, in pla-
cards which its members posted
clandestinely throughout the city
this week, admitted that it was
responsible for last week's bomb-
ing of the Jerusalem police head-
quarters, which resulted in the
death of one constable and in
serious injury to several others.
The terrorist organization warned
that its acts of terrorism will
not abate until the Palestine
Government changes its Jewish
immigration policy. The posters
charged that captured terrorists
were being tortured and beaten
by the police.
At Jerusalem the police an-
nounced that several of the ter-
rorists that were implicated in
the crime are under arrest. The
names of the arrested persons
have not been divulged.
