And I like to write about them, especially when they concern a Wac. Just recently I read a story about Pfc. Mary Jane Ford of Los Angeles, Calif., who received the Soldier's Medal for making a gallant effort to save a drowning soldier's life at Camp McCoy, Wis. So I am pass- ing It along to my readers. At Airport Lake near Camp McCoy, Pfc. Falvius M. Hopkins had started to swim across the lake when he became exhausted and went down for the second time. WAC Pfc. Ford dived into the water and swam toward the soldier. The Wac's citation for the Soldier's Medal described just what she did : "Private First Class Ford, ob- serving the man in distress, fear- lessly and at the risk of her life, promptly went to his assistance. Before she could reach him the man sank a third time. She re- peatedly dived and finally lo- cated the body, brought it to the surface and towed it to shore." The Wac applied artificial res- piration in a vain effort to save the soldier's life. Pfc Ford is the daughter of Major Byington Ford, executive officer of Dayton Army Air Field, Dayton, 0. She is an ex- pert swimmer and horse woman, plays badminton, tennis and hockey. Her father was giving her flying lessons when the war started. Pvt. Ford attended the Univer- sity of Oregon for two years. She enlisted in the WAC from Los Angeles in January, 1943, and was assigned to Camp McCoy immediately after basic training at Fort Des Moines. She was transferred to the Signal Corps on June 29 this year. Pfc. Ford's courage is typical of the spirit of so many Waco that I think her story rightfully belongs in this column.
