Great Britain to Open
Refugee Haven in Libya

NEW YORK (WNS).—Under-
Secretary of State Edward R.
Stettinius announced at a Jewish
Unity dinner honoring Repre-
sentative Sol Bloom that the
British Government had just
agreed to the establishment of
a new war refugee haven in one
of the former Italian colonies in
Libya.
Recalling the announcement
several weeks ago by President
Roosevelt that a camp to accom-
modate 1,000 refugees was being
set up at Fort Ontario, Oswego,
N. Y., Mr. Stettinius voiced the
hope that other countries would
follow the lead of the British
and American governments and
take similar steps.
"As you know," Mr. Stettinius
said, "large numbers of refugees
are arriving in southern Italy ev-
ery day from Yugoslavia. Great
efforts have been made to find
places of refuge for them.
"This new haven will do much
to ease the suffering of these
unfortunate people. We profound-
ly hope that this act of mercy,
like that of our own country a
few weeks ago, will lead to simi-
lar acts by other nations in open-
ing their doors to peoples who
would otherwise perish under
Nazi brutality."
Telling of the State Depart-
ment's constant efforts to help
refugees escape from Europe, the
Under-Secretary said:
"Much of the story of assist-
ance to the refugees of Europe
cannot now be told without seri-
ously endangering our future ef-
forts. Escape from Europe is not
easy. Savage retaliation by the
Nazis follows quickly upon any
mistake of ill-planned action.
"But in a thousand different
ways in many different lands, the
work goes on night and day.
When the full story can be told,
it will be one of the most dra-
matic chapters in the history of
human freedom."
Mr. Stettinius said America's
work in behalf of European refu-
gees "is being carried on under
the active sponsorship of two of
the great men of our ages—
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and
Cordell Hull."
"They are men of large hearts
and large minds," he continued,
"and I can assure you that their
hearts and their minds are deep-
ly concerned in this work of res-
cuing human lives from Axis
cruelty."

portance of having every eligible
voter exercise his franchise in
the forthcoming elections, the
Jewish Community Council is
calling upon all its constituent
organizations to urge their mem-
bers to be sure to vote in the
July 11 Primaries.
Dr. B. Benedict Glazer and
Joseph Bernstein, co-chairmen of
the Community Council's inter-
nal relations committee, are
writing to the presidents, secre-
taries, and delegates of the 208
member organizations of the
Council, stressing the vital im-
portance of this year's elections
in the history of our country
and the world at large. They
underscore the fact that while
the Community Council does not
advise anyone how to vote, it
urges very strongly that every-
one should vote. This is the basic
responsibility of every citizen of

November elections.

Re-Election on His Record

In his campaign for re.election
as Lieutenant-Governor of midi.
gan on the Republican ticket,
Eugene C. Keyes has stressed
the important fact that his rec-
ord in office shows him to be
liberal in thought and of a p ro.
gressive type. He has the youth
and vigor to carry out all the
arduous duties of the office. lie
feels that the trying times of
the postwar period will require
experienced men in office, and
asks the citizens to bear this
thought in mind and to vote for
him in the coming primaries on
Tuesday, July 11.
