Jewish Life in Rome

TEL AVIV (Palcor).—An up-
surge of Zionist feeling among
the youth of liberated Rome is
reported by members of Jewish
Palestine's military units writing
from the liberated city. The let-
ters, published in the Hebrew
newspapers in this country, tell
of the reorganization of the
Rome Jewish community under
the guidance of a military rabbi
from Palestine and of the roar-
ing reception given by Rome's
Jews to Jewish Palestine's vol-
unteers who visited the city
shortly after the Allied forces had
marched in.
"Thousands of Jews with tears
of joy streaming over their faces
surrounded our vehicles enblaz-
oned with the Shield of David,"
the soldiers write. They report
that at present Rome's Jewish
population consists of 11,000
persons, of whom 9.000 are orig-
inal inhabitants of the city, 1,400
are refugees from France, Yugo-
slavia and Poland and 6,000
from Northern Italy. For the
nine months of the Nazi occupa-
tion, the Jews residing in Rome
hid in catacombs and cellars and
many were given sanctuary in
monasteries. The children espe-
cially were helped by the church.

hailed as saviors by the Jews of
Rome, tendered all possible aid,
even givi •g away their own pri-
vate articles for the needy. It
was they who initiated Zionist
activity among the Jewsh youths
who are eagerly volunteering for
military service.
