Allied Military Governments Rescinds
All Anti-Jewish Laws- in Rome

NEW YORK (WNS).— Alex-
ander H. Uhl, foreign editor of
the New York newspaper PM,
last week cabled a report from
Rome that one of the first acts
of the Allied Military Govern-
ment has been to rescind all
anti-Jewish legislation and to re-
store to the Jews their homes
and property. Mr. Uhl reported
that of the 12,000 Jews who
remained in Rome after the Ger-
man occupation of northern Italy
only about 4,000 to 5,000 are
free today. More than 4,000 fled
to other lands. Of those whose
fate is known or guessed at, re-
ported Mr. Uhl, about 5,000 were
deported to Germany or Poland
in the first round-up by the Nazis
last October. More than 2,000
of the deportees were old men,
women and children.
In his graphic account of the
joy of the Romans in their hour
of liberation, Mr. Uhl states that
Jews are coming out of their
hiding places in droves and that
the first thing they do is to go
to the synagogues and offer
prayers for their liberation. On
information gathered from eye-
witnesses and sympathetic Ital-
ians, Mr. Uhl gave an account of
the tragedy of Italian Jewry, of
the confiscation of Jewish prop-
erty, of the lootings of Jewish
homes, of the imposition of heavy

money fines draining th e
penny of every Jew, of Gern
cruelty and of the agony
perienced by Jewish fami
broken up by deportations I
imprisonment.
