According to the prophecies
of Isaiah, the Messianic era of
the redemption of mankind and
Israel from the wrongs and dead
weights of injustices, will be led
on by little children! It seems
to me that in conformity and
harmony with this prophetic pre-
diction, the redemption and res-
cue of Israel from the fierce per-
secutions and onslaught of its
foes is also led on by little and
small nations. When the future
c hroniclers of our days will de-
scribe in a new "Megiloh," in
a "Megiloth Esh," in a "scroll
of fire" as Bialik calls it, the
unparalleled sufferings and mas-
sacres of European Jewry in our
days, they will remember with
unutterable gratitude and ad-
miration that the beginnings of
the deliverance of Israel, the
first rays of light in the dark
night of their planned annihila-
tion, were brought about by small
nations.
In the majestic edifices of Is-

r

erected niches of honor to those
small nations who have proved
themselves to be the "salt of
earth," the preservers of the
loftiest ideals of brotherhood and
righteousness. It is true that the
rescue of European, yea, of
world Jewry, can only be accom-
plished and brought to consum-
mation by the powerful group of
Anglo-Saxon nations, yet the
little nations marched in the
vanguard to light the candles
of human sympathy and love to
Jewry. The Netherlands and Bel-
gium, while themselves bleeding
under the iron heel of their ruth-
lsss conqueror, have dared to
defy them and to raise their
voice for the equal right of the
Jew to the glory and suffering of
their country. Many of them
have put on their arms the Mogen
Dovid and identified themselves
with the fate of Israel. The dec-
laration of Sweden to receive

PASSOVER GREETINGS TO ALL!

One day—I don't doubt it—
a mighty monument will be raised
in Eretz Israel perpetuating the
deliverance of Jewry from its
most cruel and fiercest foes, the
Nazis. While on the apex of this
monument will be carved the
mighty figures of America and
Brittania on the foot of this
monument there will stand il-
luminated in trancendantal glory
the figures of the little nations
which have led on by Divine
Providence the deliverance of
Israel in the Messianic era of
Israel's redemption.
"Monuments and men."
In connection with the large
settle bombing of great historical
cities, rich in monumental and
artistic relics, the question was
raised whether even the emer-
gencies and necessities of the
war do ethically justify the de-
struction of the immortal works
of art, which are the fruits and
hallmarks of the culture and
progress of centuries gone by.
In regard to this issue, it may
be of great interest the remark
and utterance of a rabbi on the
experience similar to it in its
moral bearing. Rabbi Joshua Ben
Levi—so it is told to us—was
one day delegated with a few
colleagues to Rome in order to
bring about the abrogation of
some cruel edicts issued against
Jewry. While walking in the
broad streets and avenues of
Rome, Rabbi Joshua noted that
the chief ornament of the em-
pire city, of its parks and gar-
dens, were the marble statues of
its previous emperors and rulers.
At the same time—it was in the
cold winter months— the Rabbi
observed how careful the statues
of the rulers were enwrapped
and swathed in precious rugs
and draperies to protect them
from the damage of blizzards
and storms. Near to the monu-
ments the rabbi beheld miserable
human beings, cowering on the
earth, clothed in tattered, torn
7 rags, shivering and trembling
from the cold. Beholding this
painful and hurting sight, the
well protected marble shafts and
the unprotected human bodies,
the rabbi called out: "How un-
fathomable are the ways of God
and how much more uncalculable
are the actions of man! Dead,
insensate, unfeeling stone figures
they drape in warm wrappings,
and human beings like them-
selves, of sensate flesh and blood,
they allow to freeze and to
shiver!"
Alas, it is the attitude cen-
sured by the great rabbi that
our would-be spokesmen of cul-
ture and civilization would ac-
cept. They stress and press with
pro-Nazi hypocrisy the barbarism
and savagery of the Allies for
the destruction of works of art,
while they all kept silent and
connoted by it the killing of
millions of human creatures—
children of God—by the Nazi
powers.

Refugees are still coming to
this country. Since America en-
tered the war, more than 12,000
have arrived. Last year the Eu-
ropean - Jewish Children's Aid,
NRS affiliate, took under its care
more refugee children than in
any single year but one since
the advent of Hitler. Many of
these newcomers, as well as
earlier arrivals, still need cash
relief and family services. The
NRS still provides these services
to an average of 2,400 persons
monthly. It is now placing some
150 refugees every month in
jobs, many in war industries. The

that liberty, like all doctrines,
must be a vital doctrine or it
will die. We understand that if
we do not uphold the liberty of
others, we jeopardize our own
precious liberties. If we are to
maintain American democracy
and help to build a better world,
we must share with the unhappy
victims of persecution who look
to us for sanctuary our heritage
of the right to life. liberty and
the pursuit of happiness.

critically needed. NRS is also
providing many other services to
help loyal alien refugees comply
with wartime security regula-
tions and to enable the new-
comers to participate in our war
effort.
No thinking person underesti-
mates the efforts that will be re-
quired to bring these tasks to
completion. But as long as Pass-
over inspires the Jewish people
to champion the cause of liberty,
no effort will be considered too
great. To aid the refugee in our
midst is not only a natural ex-
pression of decency and human-
ity, it is an innate realization

sons who seek them. Some three-
quarters of a million names, now
on hand in its files, will be an
invaluable asset to the NRS and
other public and private agen-
cies as well as to governments
in the huge postwar project of
locating and rehabilitating refu-
gees.
Of all the projects content-
plattd by NRS perhaps the most
significant is that of education
on the value of refugees to the
United States and the importance
of maintaining America's policy
of giving sanctuary to the op-
pressed. NRS records in them-
selves provide overwhelming evi-
dence on this point. What the
agency aims to do, in coopera-
tion with other organizations, is
to present that evidence in the
most effective terms and to the
widest possible audience.
The accomplishment of these
projects is, of course, predicated
on the continued functioning of
the traditional NRS programs of
relief and economic assistance,
job and professional placement,
migration service, liaison between
official Washington and the lo-
cal refugee aid committees, and
on the many other services de-
signed to further the adjustment
of refugees now in the United
States and those who will find
a haven here in the future. This
can be accomplished if adequate
funds are made available to the
