Fort Custer, Kellogg Field, Jones Hospital
Service Men and Wacs Celebrate Purim

Servicemen and WACs of Jew-
ish faith from Fort Custer, Kel-
logg Field and Percy Jones Gen-
eral Hospital, as well as soldiers'
wives, were given the oppor-
tunity to observe the holiday of
Purim on Sunday, March 12, at
Carpenter's Hall in Battle Creek.
The holiday was observed with
a service conducted by Chaplain
Martin M. Perley of Fort Custer
and provided the occasion for
more than 300 servicemen, WACs
and servicemen's wives to gather
together. A holiday breakfast of
bagels and lox, providing a home
touch, was served at the USO
West Michigan Club, where a
group of Junior Hostesses who
had come from Detroit, by ar-
rangement with the Detroit of-
fice of the JWB, joined the gath-
ering. Later the crowd gathered
at Carpenter's Hall for a dance
and entertainment which was
followed by the Purim service
and a supper which included tra-
ditional "Hamantaschen" and pro-
vided a real Purim atmosphere.
Added to the festivities were
traditional Jewish folk dances
which the servicemen joined with
great enthusiasm.
The celebration was sponsored
by the Jewish Welfare Board
Army and Navy Committees of
Detroit, Muskegan, Saginaw and
