A Tragic Anniversary
January 30 will mark one of the great-
est tragedies in the tragic history of man-
kind, for on that day 11 years ago Presi-
dent Paul von Hindenburg appointed

neighbors and imposed their authority
upon them. The New Order, however, was
the reversion to a much earlier day, when
the Roman legions conquered their weak-
er neighbors and enslaved them.
The idea of a colonial empire of Eu-
rope was one of the psychopathic ideas
of the Nazis. Many of these madmen no
doubt believe implicitly in the Nordic
supremacy and master race dogmas. They
succeeded in indoctrinating millions of
young Germans with the notion, the Nazi
prisoners in America still believe it de-
spite the defeats in Russia and Italy.
Had the Nazis succeeded in conquer-
ing all of Europe their idea of a New
Order based upon the enslavement of the
400 million Europeans would have failed.
The peoples of Europe has had too long
a position as sovereign peoples and, since
the French Revolution, the idea of equal-
ity and freedom has grown despite the
many setbacks it has received.
We now are confident that the Nazis
will fail in their grandiose plan of Euro-
pean and then world conquest. The tragic
experiment has cost too many lives and
destroyed too much wealth for us to fail
to learn something from it. The problems
of Europe cannot be solved by conquest,
nor were they solved before this war by
balance of power arrangements. There
surely must be some way out. Intelligent
Europeans will surely try to find a way
out after this frightful tragedy.
This was a day of delirious rejoicing
for the Nazis, for now this crew of psy-
chopaths, degenerates, street fighters,
sadists, charlatans and pseudo-scientists
were handed over the reins of government
and there was no authority to oppose any

German life.
The cornerstone of the structure of tions upon which to build.
Nazidom was the Nordic superiority dog-
ma, or the master race dogma. The fact
that not a single recognized scientist ap-
proved these dogmas meant nothing to
the Nazis. The Nazis were determined to
establish "A New Order in Europe" with
the master race in control and all the
other peoples of Europe -their serfs and
slaves.
The treatment of the Jews should have
aroused the fears and suspicions of the
peoples of Europe who had predicated
their political life upon the ideas of
greater freedom and more equality, but
just as many Germans thought that Naz-
ism was a temporary ailment that would
pass away, so many good, honest and
forthright Europeans thought that Nazism
was for domestic consumption only, and
once all Germans were part of the Reich
that all would be well.
We have learned to our great loss and
sorrow that the master race dogma was
not merely a slogan to rally the Nazis
and Germans everywhere, but was the
very heart of Nazism.
Cruel and ruthless masters have never
shown any regard for the sensibilities of
their slaves. To these masters, slaves must
serve and masters should rule. The master
race proceeded on this assumption. The
property, rights, lives and sensibilities of
other Europeans were of no concern to
them. These peoples would either accept
the Nazis as their masters or would be
annihilated with fire and sword. Thus,
Jan. 30, 1933, was the beginning of a
tragic era surpassing any like era in the
history of mankind.
A Welcome Order
The Executive Order of President
Roosevelt establishing a War Refugee
Board consisting of Secretary of State
Hull, Secretary of the Treasury Morgen-
thau and Secretary of War Stimson is a
piece of very heartening news.
Now there is at long last an official
American government agency that is di-
rected "to take action for the immediate
rescue from the Nazis of as many as
possible of the persecuted minorities of
Europe, racial, religious and political."
The order specifically provides: "It
shall be the duty of the heads of all
agencies and departments to supply or
obtain for the board such information
and to extend to the board such supplies,
shipping and other specified assistance
and facilities as the board may require in
carrying out the provisions of this order,"
and further, "the board and State, Treas-
ury and War Departments are authorized
to accept the services or contributions of
any private person, private organization,
State agencies, or agencies of foreign
governments in carrying out the purposes
of this order."

BACK THE FIGHTING MEN WITH FIGHTING DOLLARS
Many complaints have been registered
by those who felt that there was callous
indfference on the part of the govern-
ments of Britain and the United States,
and the specific complaints were that the
available shipping for rescue was not
utilized and that private organizations
that were equipped to do rescue work
were not given an opportunity to use
their expert personnel and experience.
The executive order now takes care of
these two serious and oft-repeated com-
plaints.
The "New Order in Europe" was new
in the sense that no European aggressor,
for centuries, had attempted to enslave
his neighbors. Other aggressors had at-
tempted to conquer and had for a time
succeeded, as did Napoleon Bonaparte,
but the conqueror did not think that he
