Symphony Orchestra will present
the first American performance of
"A Short Symphony" by Aaron
Copland on the General Motors
Symphony of the Air program
Sunday, Jan. 9 (NBC, 5:00 to
6:00 p.m., EWT). The other se-
lections are taken from the works
of Debussy, Fernandez, Albeniz
and Guarnieri.
The "Short Symphony" was
written by the Brooklyn-born com-
poser between 1931 and .1933. It
was given its first performance in
Mexico under the direction of Car-
los Chavez, to whom it is dedi-
cated. The work is in three
movements, slow, fast, slow, play-
ed without pause. Copland ex-
plains that he has written many
works of the same length in the
space of two weeks. But in writ-
ing this symphony he wanted to
create a perfect piece of music,
hence the two years composition
time. Copland is one of the best
known of the modern American
composers, both in the United
States and abroad. His "El Salon
Mexico" is 'a frequent concert fav-
orite. He is perhaps known to
most people for his motion picture
scores, including those for "Our
Town" and "North Star."
Opening the program, Stokow-
ski leads the NBC Symphony Or-
chestra in the gay and scintillat-
;ng "Holiday in Seville" by Al-
beniz. It is followed by a work
in extreme contrast. the dreamlike

the congregation.
The speaker, Merrill "Red"
Mueller, is described as Ameri-
ca's most "blitzed" reporter and
is often described as reckless,
shining-faced, with a personality
to match his red hair. In this
man's war, he is uncomfortabie
.in quiet places. When the heat's
off in one - sector, he picks up
typewriter and toothbrush and
takes himself to a congenial spot,
where howitzers are howling and
bombs are tearing up the terrain.
He travels so fast, not even his
own publication, "Newsweek,"
knows where he is from one day
to the next. But it has always
been like that with "Red".
He has most recently been on
the move again, having been in
London, then Gibraltar, then with
Montgomery's Eighth Army, Bur-
ma, India and China, and his
most recent move has been in
the thick of action through the
wars of Sicily and Italy, having
just returned from Naples, Italy,
from which point he broadcast
over the NBC network.
He has been decorated with
the Headliners Award of Valor,
the Purple Heart, and the Regi-
mental Badge from the French
with an accompanying Foragiere
of the Legion of Honor.
His topic will be most inter-
esting and he has designated his
lecture subject as "Where Do
We Go From Here".

The Ladies' Auxiliary of the
Yishivah had its installation of
officers Monday night, Jan. 3, at
the Yeshivah building. The follow-
ing were installed: Mrs. Sarah
Cornblitt, president; Mrs. Pom-
erantz, Mrs. Farber, Mrs. Lip-
shitz, Mrs. Singer, vice presi-
dents; Mrs. M. Kushner, secre-
tary; Mrs. Rose Rubin, treasurer.
