Fall Convention of Michigan Synagogue
Conference to Be Held November 21, 1943
Preparations are under way for
the coming fall convention of the
Michigan Synagogue Conference,
which will be held Sunday morn-
ing, November 21, the date set
at the last meeting of the Execu-
tive Committee.
At that meeting held jointly
with the Finance Committee on
October 17, an inspiring report of
a successful season of activities
was heard from Rabbi M. J. Wohl-
gelernter, general secretary, and
plans were laid for even greater
and more expanded program of
action for the ensuing months.
Among its more recent achieve-
ments, it was disclosed, are in-
cluded: the successful High Holi-
days War Bond Drive, which by
the concerted efforts of all syna-
gogues netted the U. S. treasury
over two million dollars to the
credit of the Jewish Community.
Through the intercedence of the
Michigan Synagogue Conference,
postponment of induction into the
Army was secured for Jewish boys
until after the High Holidays. The
report also revealed the great
part the Michigan Synagogue
Conference has played in the fur-
therence of the Sabbath Observ-
ance Movement in close co-opera-
tion with the Women's League for
Sabbath Observance.
The most outstanding achieve-
ment of the Michigan Synagogue
Conference in recent months, is
the creation of a Circuit Rabbin-
ate for the State of Michigan and
the engagement of Dr. S. S. Auer-
bach as field Rabbi, to administer
to the religious and educational
needs of the smaller communities

scattered throughout the State of
Michigan, who, by reason of their
small size, do not have the means
of engaging a spiritual leader
themselves. Rabbi Auerbach's
heartening report of achievements
in the comparatively short time
of his activity more than justify
the efforts of Michigan Jewry to
support this sacred cause. Rabbi
Auerbach's work has brought the
spirit of traditional Judaism and
Jewish education in places where
no Jewish religious life existed
at all.
To give further impetus to the
work of the Michigan Synagogue
Conference, Rabbi Jacob M.
Brown, one of the most accomp-
lished graduates of the Hebrew
Theological College of Chicago, is
executive director.
Rabbi Brown was ordained in
1934, and received his academic
training at Crane College, Chi-
cago, and Emory University, Ga.
Since his grduation, he has gain-
ed considerable acclaim in the
communities he has served, name-
ly, Atlanta, Ga., and Sioux City,
Iowa. In recognition of his im-
portant work for religious Zion-
ism, he was named a member of
the Vaad Haroshi of the Mizrachi
Organization of America. Rabbi
Brown is also a member of the
faculty of the Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah in Detroit.

to its 89 sons and daughters in
the Armed Forces of the United

The drill and color guard of
the Jewish War Veterans of the

monies by presenting the Colors
and leading the gathering in the
Pledge of Allegiance.
The keynote of the meeting was
struck by Solomon Rubin, presi-
dent of the Organization, who
said: "With a son and daughter

The meeting was addressed by
James I. Ellman, president of the
Jewish Community Council; Sam-
uel J. Rhodes, Commander of the
Jewish War Veterans, and Mayor
Edward J. Jeffries, Jr.
Mr. Ellman unveiled the Honor
Roll and expressed the deep ap-
preciation of the Jewish commun-
ity for the fine part the organiza-
tion has taken in Jewish affairs
and its generous contribution to
the War Chest.
Mr. Rhodes presented the Col-
ors to the organization and said :
"The foes of democracy are st ill
among us. Some of them may be
hiding in their rat holes for the
duration, but they will scurry
forth when victory has been won
on the field of battle and at-
tempt to nullify that victory by
transplanting the vicious doctrine
of hitlerism to this country. And
if we permit that to happen, then
the oceans of blood being spilled
today for the preservation of our
ideals and traditions will have
been in vain." He further stated:
"It is the duty of every freedom-
loving American to fight hate, in-
tollerance and bigotry if we are
to keep our flag over the 'land of
the free and the home of the
brave.' We must constantly fight
for the preservation of those in-
alienable rights guaranteed to all
Americans by our Constitution
and Bill of Rights."
Mayor Jeffries dwelt on the
important part the people of De-
troit are playing in our war ef-
fort and emphasized the need of
constant co-operation between all
groups so that we may not falter
in that effort. He said: "As De-
troit goes, so goes the war. The
more we produce for our armed
forces, the more harmoniously we
work and strive together, the
sooner will we have our loved
ones back home with us."
Over $650.00 was raised at the
rally for the Turover USO Com-
mittee to enable it to carry on
its work of sending packages to
its men and women in the armed
forces. The committee in charge
of arrangements for the evening
was composed of Isadore Sosnick,
Max L. Roberts, Abe Geller, Jul-
ius Schwartz, Ben Horwitz, Mor-
ris Fisher and Sam Bonin. Mrs.
Samuel Kunin, president of the
Ladies Auxiliary, and Mrs. Israel
Weiner, its vice-president, were in
charge of the committee which
served a luncheon at the conclu-
sion of the ceremonies.
