DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle 2 October I, 943 Peace Math Its Victories By JOSEPH E. BECK Executive Director. National Refugee Service There was never a greater opportunity, or a greater need, for enlightened and constructive thinking and action by American Jews than that which will con- front us during the coming year. Victory for the United Nations, if not close at hand, is at least within sight. But victory will not automatically solve all problems, heal all wounds, re- pair all damages, or nullify all the destructive forces that Hitler- ism has generated and promoted during the past decade. It will only afford mankind another chance to work out rational, civ- ilized solutions to its problems and thus halt the vicious cycle that has plunged the world into two terrible blood baths in the space of a generation. Victory will avert the danger of physical destruction of the Jewish people. Thus it will enable us to concentrate our intelligence and our energies on fashioning for ourselves a secure and decent future in which our human and civil rights will be established and preserved. Whether we do achieve these things depends on our own efforts more than on any other single factor. The experience of our American Jewish communities in dealing with one of the great and per- plexing tasks created by Nazism gives us a valuable clue to the approach and methods to be adopted in meeting our postwar problems. I refer to our achieve- ment in receiving in our midst and integrating into American life more than two hundred thou- sand Jewish refugees from Naz- ism. In this case, as in all human affairs requiring intense concen- tration on a thousand minute problems and details of daily rou- tine, there is a natural tendency to overlook the broader implica- tions of what we are doing, to fail to see the forest on account of the trees. We may tend to measure our accomplishments in the sphere of refugee adjustment in terms of the number of people resettled, the number of job place- ments, the amount of relief. These things are all important, indeed vitally important, but in order to AND KEAYS CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS See PEACE—Page 7 Le Shono Toro Tikosen t M. A great achievement has been recorded to the credit of Amer- ican Jewry in dealing with refu- gee immigration to the United States. There has probably never been so large a migratory move- ment to this or any other country which has been accomplished with so little friction with the native population and with so rapid and smooth an adjustment—and this despite the fact that much of the immigration took place while the Carpets Rugs Linoleum TOWNSEND 8- 24 70 A Joyous New Years To All WITH BEST WISHES THAT YOU AND YOURS MAY ENJOY GOOD HEALTH AND PEACE THROUGH THE YEARS TO COME CADILLAC 2148 r--- HOTELS ROOSEVELT BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR CENTRAL SERVICE COMPANY 2250 14TH ST.
