usual student activities of the
ordinary college, including com-
petition with other schools in
chess, basketball, baseball, ten-
nis and other sports, clubs and
student journals written in Eng-
lish, French, German and He-
brew, give scope to enthusiasts
in various fields of interest.
An indirect, although highly
valuable phase of Yeshiva Col-
lege work, has been its civilian
defense activities. Over fifty per
cent of the students have receiv-
ed training as air raid wardens,
many of them participate as fire
department auxiliaries and some
have been trained in first aid
work. More than one hundred
students and faculty have do-
nated blood to the American Red
Cross Blood Chest. In addition,
many of the recently graduated
rabbis of the Yeshiva are now
serving our Government as Chap-
lains in the Army.
The recent declaration by Pres-
ident Roosevelt to the effect that
the War Front and the Home
Front are but One Front in the
attempt to stamp out Hitlerism,
fascism and paganism, clearly
demonstrates the important part
played in these days of peril by
this singular institution of learn
ing in the War Effort. This fac
becomes all the more eviden
when it is realized that new and
additional "Yeshivoth Kitanoth,"
or simply elementary and inter-
mediate parochial schools, from
which a large part of the Yes-
hiva College student body is re-
cruited, have been springing up
ever since the Hitler rise. Indeed,
the "Four Freedoms" are being
fought on the Home Front as
well as on the War Front by im-
planting into the hearts and
minds of youth the principles and
ideologies that the Allied Nations
are striving for.
With the approaching High
Holidays, when we are reminded
once again that there is no life
without religion and that culture
without spiritual values is mean-
ingless, Yeshiva College, stand-
ing as a "tower of cultural and
spiritual strength," lends hope
to posterity and seems to leave
the message of "take heart!"
