Editor's note: The author of this article is the chairman of the
Women's Division of the National Jewish Welfare Board. This
article deals with only one phase of the vast activities carried
on by the Jewish Welfare Board.

Officially it's called the Serve-
A-Camp program. The boys call
it Heaven.
The program of supplying gifts
to men and women in the armed
forces stationed in remote camps
by Jewish women's groups in
communities hundreds of miles
away has been in operation for
just a year. Inaugurated last Sep-
tember by the Women's Division
of the Jewish Welfare Board,
the plan has been so successful
that it has earned the commenda-
tion of the War Department and
the USO.

Board, have been organized by
the Jewish women's organizations
in more than a score of cities.
They are filling the needs of over
30 large Army camps on the
continent and territorial bases.
Each committee "adopts" one
or more Army camps and dis-
tributes its gifts through the lo-
cal USO-JWB director. A typical
monthly request sheet to a Serve-
A-Camp Committee includes a
wide variety: 500 razor blades,
100 steel mirrors, 150 tubes of
shaving cream, 250 books of
soap leaves, 25 small sewing
kits, large sewing kits for the
USO Club, hundreds of chocolate
bat's, 2 battery radios, 15 har-
monicas, 20 dozen table tennis

ketballs and footballs, phonograph
records, two hand-winding phono-
graphs.
But there are also unusual re-
quests. A private in a distant
camp has a great yearning for a
tuba. A boy in Alaska craves to
hear Beethoven's Moonlight So-
nata. Others ask for English-
Spanish dictionaries, for swing
recrqds, for hometown English-
Jewish papers. These gifts are
made available by the Serve-A-
Camp units to soldiers in the
camps served without regard to
race, color or creed. They are.
most of them, trifles in them-
selves but they add up to an
enormous difference in the mo-
rale, the sense of friendship, the
sense of well-being of our men
and women in the armed forces.
The National Women's Division
of the Jewish Welfare Board, it-

old. It was form6d to coordinate
and channel the work of numer-
ous Jewish women's groups in the
JWB program for servicemen. •
These organizations are: Na-
tional Council of Jewish Women,
the Women's Branch of the Union
of Orthodox Jewish Congrega-
tions of America, Women's Div:-
sion of the American Jewish Con-
gress, Women's League of the
United Synagogue of America,
the National Ladies' Auxiliary of
the Jewish War Veterans of the
United States, the National Fed-
eration of Temple Sisterhoods,
and Hadassah.
The division consists of three
committees—the War Effort Com-
mittee, the Committee for Work
with Women and Girls, and the
Speakers Committee.
The Women's Division is an
advisory rather than a functional
body. There are no independent
