AZA for Holding Convention by Mail
WASHINGTON, D. C.—Presi-
dent Roosevelt, Prime Minister
Mackenzie King of Canada, Sec-
retary of the Treasury Henry
Morgenthau, Jr., and Joseph D.
Eastman, director of the Office of
Defense Transportation, Dr. E. • K.
Fret well, chief Scout executive
of the Boy Scouts; and Henry
Monsky, president of Bnai Brith,
are among the notables who this
week paid tribute to Aleph Zadik
Aleph, Bnai Brith youth organi-
zation, for its patriotic example
in calling off its national con-
vention and replacing it by a
"convention by mail" in order . to
relieve the nat:on's transportation
system of the burden of carrying
500 delegates who normally travel
some 1,000,000 miles round trip.
Stephen S. Early, President
Roosevelt's secretary, wrote the
AZA that "the President is glad
to hear of your plans to con-
serve transportation resources and
facilities by holding a national
war service convention by mail
instead of a general assembly.
He sends his hearty greetings to
all who participate, with best
wishes that the convention will
further the war effort and thereby
hasten victory."
Prime Minister King, who paid
tribute to the 1,000 Canadian AZA
members in the armed forces. ex-
tended his "warm congratulations
to Aleph Zadik Aleph on its ini-
tiative and thoughtfulness in
holding this convention by mail,
thus saving hundreds of thousands
of miles of travel by rail at a
time, when the first claim upon
transportation, must be for troops
and supplies so urgently needed
by the United Nations in this
world war for freedom."
Mr. Eastman said that AZA's
convention by mail "will be of
real help in easing the present
heavy burden on our passenger
transportation facilities. The young
men who comprise your organiza-
tion have shown an admirable
sense of leadership in recognizing
the seriousness of this situation
and acted accordingly. I deeply
appreciate their patriotic coopera-
tion in the travel conservation
program of the Office of Defense
Transportation. "Aleph Zadik Al-
eph's numerous and valuable war
service activities constitute a
splendid example of the eagerness
of our young people to contribute
to the war effort."
Lauded by Morgenthau
Secretary Morgenthau said that
the AZA's convention by mail is
setting a fine example of volun-
tary self-restraint to the rest of
the nation. Your war bond activi-
ties also constitute a record of
which you may well be proud.
These examples of voluntary par-
ticipation in your country's war
effort are the kind upon which a
democracy thrives."
Dr. Fretwell hailed the AZA
convention by mail as a "signifi-
cant contribution to the war ef-
fort" and paid tribute to the serv-
ices of the National Bnai Brith
AZA Committee on Scouting. Mr.
Monsky acclaimed the AZA con-
vention as a "unique idea' through

Some years ago, when we told
our readers that Leslie Howard,
the English stage and screen star
par excellence, was Jewish, and
that his real name was Steiner,
we were deluged with protests .
Leslie Howard couldn't be Jewish,
people wrote in—he was so very,
very English . . . Now that he
has been shot down by the Nazis
while doing important British pro-
paganda work, the newspapers
confirm the fact that he was
born Steiner . . . And now we
can tell you how we learned this
years ago . . . Leslie Howard was
playing in 'The Petrified Forest"
on a Broadway stage . . . Max
Reinhardt and your truly called
on him in his dressing room . . .
Reinhardt was anxious to get
Howard to play Hamlet under his
direction . . . We chatted about
the theatre for a quarter of an
hour or more . . . Later that eve-
ning Reinhardt told us: "Leslie
Howard is too perfect an Eng-
lishman to be English .. . I think
he has some Hungarian strain in
him". . . We investigated, and
discovered that Howard's family
was named Steiner and had origi-
nally come from Hungary . . .

nominating petitions and resolu-
tions through the mail.
In explaining how the conven-
tion by mail will function, Wil-
liam V. Suckle, Bnai Brith youth
president, who will enter the Navy
upon his graduation from Harr-
yard this fall, said the convention
would be identical in almost ev-
ery respect with its predecessors
except that the delegates will re-
main in their home community
and communicate with each other
via mail. In this way, Suckle
pointed out, every one of the
more than 12,000 members of Al-
eph Zadik Aleph will be able to
take part in the annual conven-
tion for the first time.
All of the organization's 475
chapters have already elected del-
egates to the convention by mail.
These delegates will receive in
weekly installments by mail all
the reports and other convention
material usually made available
to convention delegates. The dele-
gates, in turn, will submit this
material to the entire membership
of each chapter, thus enabling the
chapter as a whole to register
its opinion on the program for
the coming year and to express
itself on the problems concerning
youth.
