Then, in the fall of 1940 she left New York as
correspondent for The Detroit News. For seventy
weeks her stories drifted back to The Detroit News
and Newsweek. Then came the vicious attack on
Hong Kong, and Miss Dew found herself a prisoner
of the Jape along with 3500 others. After six
months in the concentration camp at Fort Stanley,
she was miraculously released from prison and made
her return to this country on the exchange ship
Grips/to/in in the summer of 1942.

In this vivid, moving, and, at times, shocking per-
sonal narrative, Gwen Dew tells the story of the
attack upon the city, the viciousness on the part of
the Japanese, the kindliness of the Chinese, and the
imprisonment of the American and English res:dents
at Fort Stanley. You will not forget this eyewitness
story, this indescribable picture which could only
have been drawn by a woman—by one woman,
Gwen Dew.
