Russian Relief To
Hold Rally May 30
Rabbi Joseph Lookstein of New
York, one of the outstanding
leaders of American Jewry to-
day and a powerful orator, will
address a huge rally of Detroit
Jews on Monday evening, May
31 (Memorial Day) at the De-
troit Art Institute. The rally
is sponsored by the Folks Com-
mittee for Russian War Relief,
which is celebrating its first an-
niversary.
Besides Rabbi Lookstein, the
rally will be addressed by a
number of other prominent
speakers and leaders.
An elaborate musical program,
with the participation of two fa-
mous choirs, the Haleni and Frei-
heit Singing Society, will be
given on this occasion.
Admission to the rally is free.
Everybody is urged to attend.
James Lipton, Central
High, Wins Oratorial
Contest Held May 12
Central High School won three
honors in the University of Mich-
igan sponsored Michigan High
School Forensic Association.
James Lipton won the city cham-
pionship in the oratorical con-
test, held at Hamtramck High,
Wednesday, May 12. The subject
of his oration was "For Which
I Perish." Reuben Silver, also
Of Central, won second place in
the dramatic declamation contest
at Highland Park High School,
Thursday, May 13, with an ex-
cerpt from O'Neill's "The Em-
peror Jones." Gellert Seel won
fourth place in the extempore
speech contest, also held at
Hamtramck, Wednesday, May 12.
The boys were under the di-
rection of Manuel S. Simon, di-
rector of forensics, Central High
School.

Oriental art and rugs for more
than 40 years. He was also in-
terested in fine oil paintings and
water colors, especially pictures
by the better local artists, and
his collection of pictures included
besides pictures by famous Eu-
ropean and American masters, a
rather varied assortment of espe-
cially good examples by Jules
Rolshoven, Francis Paulus, A. P.
Wyle, J. W. Geis, Charles Wal-
tensberger, Myron Barlow, Doug-
las A. Teed, William Greason. Ilis
collection of Asiatic art was un-
excelled and included 163 rare
Chinese snuff bottles, 135 net-
sukes, 175 sword guards, 40
turos and hundreds of tine wood
carvings ,bronzes, porcelains and
buddhas, beautiful Chinese and
Persian paintings, water colors
and miniatures, dating from the
16th century.
In his collection are 50 of
the finest Persian and Turkish
rugs. Among them are the
rarest and most choice of the
beautiful antiques.
He traveled all over the coun-
try to find unexcelled examples
for his collection and was known
nationally by dealers and lovers
of art as an unusually astute and
discerning collector.
Mr. Brender was born in De-
troit and lived here always and
was a printer by trade, and all
of his friends and other collectors
