PASSOVER MESSSAGE
From the Synagogue Council of America

tr-

(Representing the Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Rabbinical
and Congregational Organizations in America)

The Synagogue Council of Am-
erica issues its Passover message
in an hour of soul anguish. We
are stunned by the overwhelming
catastrophe that has plunged mil-
lions of our people in European
lands into an inferno of horror.
Our hearts bleed for the helpless
European Jewish communities
that have borne the terrible bur-
den of Nazi ferocity. We grieve
for all peoples whose lands have
fallen prey to the looting hordes
of German frightfulness, and
whose men and women have been
enslaved.
The celebration of Passover
buoys us with new hope and cour-
age. When Moses demanded of
Pharoah thirty centuries ago, "Let
my people go," he enunciated a
principle that was to become the
Magna Charta of the human soul.
He voiced the never-ending pro-
test against the division of hu-
manity into classes of master and
slave, of victor and vanquished.
Today, wherever men are fettered,
wherever. fundamental human
rights are violated. wherever bat-

talions of tyranny are arrayed
against liberty-loving peoples,
there we find the spiritual heirs
of Moses demanding "Let my peo-
ple go."
Pharoah struts ever and anon
into the arena of human affairs,
striving to foist his degrading
bondage upon defenseless popula-
tions. In Babylon he was Ne-
buchadnezzar; in Syria he was
Antiochus. In Rome his name
was Hadrian and in Spain it was
Torquemada. In Russia it was
Nicholas. In Germany it is Hit-
ler. But Moses still lives. His
staff has been taken up by the
United Nations, and they will not
lay it down until, as President
Roosevelt declared at Casablanca,
the brutal Axis will be beaten
into unconditional surrender and
human slavery will be forever
abolished. Then all humanity
will unite in a universal Feast
of Liberty that will be a harbinger
of redemption to our agonized
generation.
This is the hopeful message that
Passover speaks to us in these

fateful days. The monstrous le-
gions of Fascist murders will de-
cline. Powerful voices have been
raised against the inhuman atro-
cities visited upon millions of
helpless Jews. The sleeping con.
science of civilization is awaken-
ing. We are enheartened by the
signs of recognition by the states-
men that a regenerated post-war
world must rest upon a moral
basis.
Let a deepened faith in God in-
vigorate us as we confront this
Passover. The song chanted by
emancipated Israel at the Red
Sea will resound in the Mediter-
ranean, in the Atlantic and in the
Pacific, in every corner of the
globe where men are frantically
struggling to preserve the four
freedoms. We shall bear patiently
and courageously whatever bur-
dens we must carry. For we
know that above the moaning and
tumult of the present struggle
the light of a brighter future
glows upon the firmament of our
hopes.

Ponciana Hotel Staff
To Be at Colonial
Hotel, Mt. Clemens

Max Elkin, wit° has just re-
turned from Miami Beach, Fla.,
is most fortunate in obtaining his
former entire kitchen and dining
room personnel of his Ponciana
Hotel in Miami Beach, which is
now one of the hotels taken over
by the U. S. Army.
This entire. personnel will be
used at his Colonial Hotel at Mt.
Clemens, which opens April 15.
The dining room, however, will
not be open until May 1, as many
of this excellent staff are now in
the employ of some of our finer
hotels in the east, and are to be
released to him by May 1.

Jr. Hadassah Joins
In Campaign To Raise
$100,000 for Palestine

To help Palestine absorb refu-
gees who can escape from Hitler
Europe and to aid that country's
war effort, the Detroit Unit of
Junior Hadassah, the Young Wo-
men's Zionist Organization of Am-
erica, is conducting a campaign
to raise its quota toward the
$100,000 goal of the national or-
ganization. Among the events
scheduled for the coming weeks
is one to which the general public
is invited. On Thursday night,
April 22, the Detroit unit of
Junior Hadassah is sponsoring a
theater party at the Wilson The-
ater to see the "Merry-Go-Round-
ers." Tickets are obtainable from
any member of Junior Hadassah,
or more specifically from Miss
Edith Wiener, chairman of the
event, at Townsend 8-7523, or
Miss Anne Baker at Tyler 7-3104.
In addition to maintaining Meier
Shfeyah, a children's village in
Palestine, and aiding Youth Ali-
yah, the rescuing agency of Jew-
ish children of Europe, Junior
Hadassah helps support the Hen-
rietta Szold School of Nursing in
Jerusalem which is today supply-
ing nurses not only for the civilian
population, but for the care of
allied troops stationed in Pales-
tine. Junior Hadassah also sup-
ports the Jewish National Fund
in its program of land purchase
for Jewish settlers. Coincident
with the fund-raising campaign,
the unit is conducting a drive for
new members, because they believe
that the more workers they have
in supporting the upbuilding of
Palestine, the more will that coun-
try do in rehabilitating the Jews
who enter now and the masses who
will go there after the war.

Report Italian Troops in France
Protect Jews From Nazis

BERNE. (WNS)--Italian troops
occupying France are protecting
Jews from Nazi Gestapo agents
rounding them up for cid porta-
tion to eastern Europe, according
to reports received here this
week. The report said that Jews
in Nazi-held France were fleeing
to the Italian-controlled territory
where they are much better
treated and receive some protec-
