fice and devotion to the com-
mon good .. . . for the anarchi-
cal and egotistic individualism of
the bourgeois age. . . . The task
to be performed is intimately
linked with a profound renewal
of religious conscience. One of
the most deep-seated vices of the
modern world has been its dual-
ism, its dissociation of the things
of God from the things of the
world. . .. This kind of disorder
cannot be cured except by the
renewal of the most profound
energies of the religious con-
science surging up into temporal
existence."
ROBERT L. CALHOUN SPEAKS
Professor Robert L. Calhoun,
of Yale University, said:
"Humanity is ill, not in weak-
ness, but through misdirected
strength. The body of mankind,
the vast structure of bone and
muscle, of steel and cement, of
steam and electricity and explod-
ing gasoline vapor, through which
the work of the world is done,
has grown to unprecedented size
and power. Moreover, it is fast
becoming one body unit together
by land, sea and air, interde-
pendent in all its parts. As never
before in their history, the re-
sources of men for work have
conic within sight of the con-
quest of hunger and drudgery,
and the opening of ways to
more abundant life for plain
people everywhere.
"But the spirit of mankind is
enslaved by its body, divided
against itself, and baffled in its
quest for that more abundant
life. Instead of using its great
machines to liberate all peoples
from want and fear, our times
appear to be in helpless bondage
to its own physical powers.
Body and spirit are out of ac-
cord and both suffer in conse-
quence. Instead of pervading the
whole earth with a single vision,
a common hope, a unified im-
pulse towards good, the spirit
of man in our times is divided
and bewildered. In the religious
faith of Hebrew and Christian
traditions at its best, the hu-
man spirit has grown in three
dimensions: height, depth and
breath. Its first and final com-
mitment is to the God of Moses
and the Prophets, the God whom
Jesus called Father, the God
high and lifted up, beyond all
things earthly and human. In
the presence of that transcendent
being, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, the
faith of Jews and Christians has
been in principle and often in
fact, set towards heights that no
human power or wisdom can
scale. Depth also, that faith has
hatl—the deep, strong roots of
a loyalty that engages the prim-
eval springs of human action, the

emotional drive and the stubborn
wills that make heroes and mar-
tyrs and patient devotees. In
principle, once more, and often
in fact, that faith has reached
out broadly in service to all
mankind. It is the first com-
mandment to love God; the sec-
ond is to love one's neighbor and
even one's enemies who also are
children of God.
"But two other sorts of faith
have developed powerful chal-
lenges to this one in the west
and in the east, alike. One is
secular humanitarianism, a re-
ligion of human prowess and rea-
son. That has breadth but lacks
depth and height. With the
startling advance of the sciences
and technology in the past four
hundred years, this sort of hu-
manism without God has spread
far and wide, mistrusting both
human. It has kept to the ap-
the sub-human and the super-
parently safe and universal road
of reason alone, and has come to
grief again and again. Today it
confronts a terrific upsurge of
the most primitive religion of
all, the fierce tribal religion of
race, class or nation that has
depth, but neither breadth nor
height. This is a warrior kind of
loyalty with tremendous driving
power for conquest of nature
and man, but without either sense
or desire for world wide broth-
erhood, nor the transcendent
holiness and love of the God of
all mankind. Under its fighting
blows, the spirit of humanity is
being split with deep wounds.
''There can be no healing for
mankind until these wounds of
the spirit can be bound up; there
can be no lasting health more-
over, until the spirit and the
body are brought into closed ac-
cord. Out of the present agony,
new physical bonds will come,
binding the peoples together
more closely than before on a
planet that will have no islands
and no dark continents left. Out
of the labor and sacrifice that
will be unavoidable once the
shooting was ended, new contacts
side by side on a common past,
among the peoples working then
may bring more wisdom and un-
derstanding if that common labor
becomes itself a vehicle of com-
mon worship, ample in breadth
and depth and height. Then hu
manity. by the power of God,
may find healing and new
strength."
DR. BETTAN SPEAKS
Dr. Israel Bettan, professor at
the Hebrew Union College, Cin-
cinnati, said:
"Today almost the entire civ-
ilized world stands arrayed
against the Axis nations, firm
in the resolve that the scourge
of paganism and brutual aggres-
sion shall be swept from the face
of the earth. By taking up arms
against the deadliest foe of free-
dom, we have regained the highs
vision of our national destiny."
Dr. Bettan predicted inevitable
victory for the cause of the
United Nations. "By our victory,
which is sure to come, wo shall
bring peace and hope and en-
largement of soul to all men
everywhere. However grievously
we bemoan the necessity of the
pr esent conflict, we cannot but
glory in the courageous faith, in
the crusading spirit, of the
United Nations. Who shall ever
despair of mankind, while me-
mories of Dunkerque, of Stalin-
grad, of Guadalcanal continue to
stir in his heart? As long as
men are capable to such supreme
sacrifices, such superb heroism,
in the cause of tin ideal, so long
will the star of hope continue to
shine above the chaos of the
world's life."
He indicated the cause for the
defeat of the Axis nations. "A
society that spurns the ideals of
religion. a society that makes
materialism the supreme law of
its life, a society that lives by
hate and not by love is a society
that has rung the knell of its own
doom."
Dr. Bettan called upon the
United Nations to "remain unit-
ed in peace for mutual security."
Dr. Bettan believed that the peace
would have to be an armed
peace, maintained by military
force. "We shall never surrender
our faith," he said, "in the pos-
sibility of man to reach ever
higher goals. . . . But at this
stage of human development, we
must be content with nothing
short of the collective guarantee
of all the nations, supported by
a might of arms none will dare
oppose, that the just peace agreed
upon shall endure and give met.
Chachmey Lublin
Remodels Building
Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin
started remodeling of its build-
ing on April 5. According to
plans the first part of the re-
construction work on the build-
ing has begun by rebuilding part
of the first floor for the Syna-
gogue, which is affiliated with
the Yeshivah.
The Synagogue will be ready
for Pesach.
The rest of the building
work will continue after Pesach.
Dormitories will be built to ac-
commodate approximately 100
students. The dining room and
the kitchen will be situated in
the basement floor. Classrooms
will be on the first floor and
both the Hebrew and High School
subjects will start again on May
3, after the holiday vacation.
The high school will be enlarg-
ed from the present 10th and
11th grades to 9th and 12th in-
cluded. Applications for enroll-
ment for new students are ac-
cepted by applying by mail, but
preferably in person, stating all
previous Hebrew and English
education.
Our present plans for re-
modeling require considerable
funds. Friends are therefore
asked to help.
the security for Which they hun-
ger."
Dr. Bettan concluded with a
plea for a deeper spiritual world.
"There is a power mightier than
the sword, which alone shall bring
healing to mankind. . . . In the
midst of the strain and bitterness
and naked cruelty of war, the
people demand to know what
they are fighting for For
battles are won not by the
weapons of war alone, not by the
but by the spirit of idealism in
the souls of men. . . . The pros-
pect of a better world is the
sturdy, well-trained battalions,
surest road to victory. Soldiers
will fight . . . . if they know
that it is freedom for which the
battle is fought. . . . The hope
of the world lies in this un-
quenchable love of freedom deep
in the hearts of men."
