March 26, 1943 bETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle a Nelson Eddy, Popular Baritone, To Sing in Detroit on April 18 Lillian Roth Held Over For Second Week At Club Casanova Nelson Eddy, who, according to "Variety," is the No. 1 box- office attraction in the United States, believes hard work is the only secret of success. He left school at fourteen and has been working ever since. The greater his success, the more he works. Favorites of his concert re- pertoire are the Lord's. Prayer, the Figaro aria from "The Bar- ber of Seville," and the Evening Star from "Tannhauser," though audiences usually demand as en- cores numbers from his films, such as "Sweet Mystery of Life" from Naughty Marietta," "Will You Remember" from "Maytime," or patter songs of Gilbert and Sullivan. The American baritone will ap- pear in recital in Detroit at Ma- sonic Auditorium on Thursday evening, April 8. Tickets may be secured at the box office, Grin- nell's Music Store, 1515 Wood- ward Avenue. Union Roth, charming singing star of Paramount Pictures, has been held over for a second week by popular demand at Lowell Bernhardt's Club Casanova. Her numerous film triumphs include "Sing You Sinners," "Vagabond King," "Love Parade" and 'Para- mount On Parade." On the air, she has been featured on the Camel Caravan programs and on the Eddie Cantor show. For her second week, Lillian will have the support of such show lumi- naries as Munro and Adams, out- standing novelty jugglers; Jimae, master of ceremonies and magic; Michael and Georgia, adagio and ballroom (lancers, and Dottie Dawn, whirlwind acrobatic and tap dancer. Eddie Camden and his "shuffle rhythm" orchestra are new arrivals on the band stand. That special downtowners dinner show at 7:30 nightly is being well patronized. Arlene Thomp- son, glamorous song stylist, heads the big new Casanova floor show, opening monday. Ladies' Auxiliary, J. W. Call Dorothy Potaker, UN. 1-0205, or Ruth Schrieber, UN. 3-3003 and Ida Gould, UN. 1-6016 for reserva- tions. The public is asked to at- tend. There's an old familiar face in the Gene Fenby combination of vocal and instrumentalists, playing in the New Continental Room and Fiesta Bar of the Savarine Hotel. It's that of Herm Ziehl, star accordionist, who was with the band when it was first organized but left short- ly after. Because of Benby's re- cent draft losses, he was able to persuade Ziehl to return to his former spot. This week Ziehl fea- tures a special arrangement of "Poet and Peasant Overture." Dick Winkler, harmonica wizard and the Savarine's popular mas- ter of ceremonies, has been called into the army. Sally Romine, charming song star is a perm- anent new feature in the Conti- nental Room and Fiesta Bar. Floretta and Boyette, mental and magic marvels are an addition to the show, over the week end.
