Jewish National Fund Purim Carnival
To Be Held At B'nai Moshe March 27

The Jewish National Fund
Purim Carnival will be held at
B'nai Moshe Synagoge Saturday
evening, March 27.
Arrangements for the carni•
vat have been completed. The
booths, prepared by the various
youth groups, will be varied and
will offer an opportunity to dis-
play certain skills. Most of the
booths will be kept as a sur-
prise, but there will be a for-
tune-teller, a photography booth,
and a Facts of Life booth, under
the auspices Of Byron Berlin.
A Tel Aviv Cafe, prepared by
Junior Hadassah, will provide
the refreshments.
Rabbi J. J. Nathan will be
the guest speaker. There will be
a Purim operetta, group singing,
led by Shirley Subar, and the
crowning of Queen Esther. To
date the representation of the
various organizations for the
Queen Esther competition are as
follows: Habonim, Barbara La-
Med; Migdal, Chanah Agranoff;
Hashomer Hatzair, Esther Corn-
blit; Little Women of Hadassith•
Leah Davidson. Notify Ruthe

resentatives.
Two dunams of land for
prizes were contributed by Wal-
Ire Field, Lawrence Crohn, anal
William Hordes. The Women's
Auxiliary of the J. N. F. has
prepared an exhibit of Zionist
and J. N. F. material. There
will be dancing at the carnival
to the music of Mivie Erman's
orchestra. The members of the

band are Jack Roston, Bernard
Mintz, Danny Kay, Leon Still-
water, Billy Burgoff, Bob Kane,
Elroy Franks and Nahman Glitt.
There will also he a kissing
booth for the purchasing of trees.
Joe Epee and Chanah Agianoff
are in charge. Hadassah Yanks
is general chairman of the car-
nival.

ject by sending in his order for
trees early. The boys in the serv-
ice say that they are proud to
have a tree planted in Palestine
in their name.

Bnai Brith Initiation

An initiation meeting will take
place Tuesday, March 23, at 8:30
p. m., at the Bnai Moshe Syna-
gogue. All new members will be
initiated at this ceremony.
The guest speaker of the eve-
ning will be Mrs. Morris Adler,
wife of Rabbi Adler, and her sub-
ject will be "Women of Glory".
A musical program has been ar-
ranged, and refreshments will he
served.
A cordial invitation is extended
to non-members and friends.

Young Judea Groups
To Present Program at
Shaarey Zedek Mar. 20

Detroit Chapter of Hadassah

Judea groups of Detroit will pre-

"Iladdasah Nurses In Action"
will be the subject of a skit to be
presented by a group of Young
Judea girls, sponsored by M iss
Selma Lichtenstein and Miss An-
na Wax. "Purim Tales," a na•ra-
tion in verse Written by Herman
Wolf, will he given by the Ka-
dima Groups, sponsored by Miss
Ruth Friedland and will depict
the romance of Esther. "Young
Jtalea At Work," a pageant show-
ing the work in Palestine and in
America. will be given by the
Keren Hanoar Group. Other
groups who will participate in
the program include the Carmel
Young Judeans, sponsored by Miss
Emma Lawton, Junior Menorah
Group, directed by Miss Evelyn
Eiselman, Henrietta Szold Group
supervised by Miss Arline Kahn,
and the Nitzachon
(Victory)
Group. Miss Kass will act as
narrator.
Miss Eiselman and
Miss Lawton have assisted with
the direction and supervision of
the skits. Mrs. John Frazer is
in charge of arrangements for
the Oneg Shabbat. Mrs. Herman
Pekarsky will present current
events. Social arrangements for
the afternoon are being arranged
by Mrs. II. S. Baskin, Mrs. A.

OBITUARY
IsinoR II. MENDELSSOHN

born July 4, 1965, died March
11, after an extended illness.
Arriving in the United States
in the late '80's, he settled in
Lake City, Iowa, where he con-
ducted a successful retail busi-
ness, retiring in about 1907.
Since his retirement, his time
was devoted exclusively to the
promotion of Jewish interests,
such as the settling of Jewish im-
migrants in the middle west and
the religious education of Jew-
ish youth.
He served as a chaplain dur-
ing the First World War. After
this, he made his home in Den-
ver, Colorado, where he was ac-
tive in the organization of Sun-
day schools. Ile next moved to
Detroit, where he organized sev-
eral Sunday schools, the most
recent being the Bnai Moshe.
Here, he continued his activities
until ill health forced him to
retire.
He is survived by his nieces,
Mrs. Max Hayman and Mrs. Har-
ry Karfe; three nephews, Beryl,
Sherman and Isadore Harrison, of
this city and Mrs. L. Susswein
and Mrs. S. Rosenthal of Chicago;
and Mrs. J. S. Jacoby of Des
Moines, Iowa.
Burial took place in Clover
Hill Park Cemetery and Rabbis
Moses Fisher and Morris Adler
and Cantor Jacob Sonenklar of-
ficiating.

Philomathic Debating
Club Election for
Model Meeting Mar. 21

With five speeches on varied
and interesting topics for the
program, the Philomathic Debat-
ing, Club held its regular weekly
meeting last Sunday in Congre-
gation Shaarey Zedek.
The speakers were Jimmy Rub-
iner, who spoke on "Towissairt
L'Overtuie-Negro Saviour": Ed-
win Jacob, who spoke on "Mod-
ern Music"; Berman Jacobson
gave some revealing facts on the
"Jews in America"; Karl Lewis
discussed 'America in the post-
war world." and Louis Silver-
stein reflected on "Pearls of Wis-
dom." The first four of these
speakers were probationers and
they did unusually well for their
"maiden speeches." Edwin Jacob
was elected best speaker of the
afternoon. Irwin Shulman deliv-
ered a stimulating critic's report.
Elections for the pa•ticipatants
in P. D. C.'s annual Model Meet-
ing will be held at the meetin,g
this coming Sunday.
Written a few weeks ago, a pro-
gram of great value on the sub-
jc;ct "Judaism-Its Message To
day," will he held with prominent
rabbis speaking. The exact (late

Meeting March 27

The board of directors of the
Michigan Synagogue Conference
will meet at Melane Malko on Sat-

Bnai Brith, To Hold
Meeting at Statler

On Sunday afternoon, March
21, the Young Women's Council
of Bnai Brith will mark the com-
pletion of this year's membership
drive at an "All Bnai Brith Day"
program in the English Room
of the Stadler Hotel. Initiation
of new members will highlight
the afternoon's program which
will start at 1:30 p. m.
Miss Sibyl Goldstein, chairman
of the Chicago Council, Record-
ing. Secretary of the District Coun-
cil and chairman of the speak-
er's bureau, will be the guest
speaker.
The four groups making up the
Young Women's Council, Deborah,
Naomi, Rebecca Gratz, and Pis-
gah, will participate in the day's
activities.
