DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle

Jewish Community Condi Asks for Immediate
Reports of Any Local Discrimination Cases

Employment discrimination is
an American problem. When it
strikes at Jews it becomes a prob-
lem and a responsibility for the
organized Jewish community. For
almost six years, the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Detroit, as
spokesman for Detroit Jewry, has
been waging a war against eco-
nomic discrimination in Detroit.
, It has conferred with industries,
commercial establishments, public
utilities, and governmental agen-
cies, in an effort to eliminate dis-
crimination and secure the adop-
tion of an American and demo-
cratic policy in the selection of
personnel.
With the growth of war indus-
tries, a new element has entered
the discrimination picture. The
government has recognized that
it has a responsibility to eliMi-
nate discrimination from indus-
tries engaged in producing the
materials with which to carry on
the war for democracy. Accord-
ingly, the President of the United
States issued Executive Order

8802. which makes discrimination
in war industr'es a breach of the
contract entered into by the manu-
facturer and the government of
the United States.
To enforce this Executive Or-
der, the President's Committee on
Fair Employment Practice was
created, with a field staff which
investgiates complaints, and makes
representations to industries ac-
cused of practicing discrimina-
tion. Members of this field staff
are now working in Detroit, and
investigating discrimination charg-
es. They are eager to receive all
reports concerning discrimination
in war industries, and urge that
such reports he submitted imme-
diately upon discovery of evidence
or suspicion that discrimination is
practiced.
The Jewish Community Council
has worked closely with the
President's Committee during its
stay in Detroit. All complaints of
discrimination in war industries
have been referred by the Council
to the field men of the President's
Committee. The Community Coun-

ences of discrimination be report-
ed to the Council office at once.
Fighting discrimination is our ob-
ligation not alone as Jews, but as
Americans who are concerned with
democracy on the Home Front.
All reported cases of discrimi-
nation in war industries will con-
tinue to be turned over by the
Council to the President's Com-
mittee. All discrimination in non-
war industries will be handled by
the Council's discrimination com-
mittee and staff. Members of the
Community Council's Discrimina-
tion are the following: Aaron

The Third World War will be
the subject of Rabbi Leon From's
sermon at the Sabbath Eve Serv-
ices of Temple Israel, next Friday
night, March 19, at 8:30, in the
Lecture Hall of the Detroit Insti-
tute of Arts.
As a result of his work as editor
and one of the chairmen of the
American Institute on 'Juda-
ism and a .Just and Enduring
Peace," Rabbi From has become
convinced that none of the steps
necessary to insure a durable
peace is being taken by the Uni-
ted Nations. Ile will describe how
a third World War is emerging
from the current war, just as the
Second World War emerged from
the conditions under which the

First World War was fought. The
public is invited to attend this
challenging lecture. There will be
an opportunity to discuss the con-
siderations presented by the Rabbi
at the Youth Symposium which
will follow the services.
The children of Temple Israel
will observe the Purim season by
holding masquerade parties. The
intermediate department will hold
its masquerade party Sunday
morning, March II, and the pri-
mary department will hold its
masquerade party Sunday morn-
ing, March 21. The confirmation
department will hold its Purim
festivities on Saturday morning,
March 13. There will be a special
Purim Family Sabbath Eve Serv-
ice at which parents will come
with their children on Friday
night, March 2d, when Cantor
Robert S. Tillman and the great
choir of Temple Israel, under the
direction of Mr. Dan Frohman
and accompanied by Organist
Karl W. Haas at the Organ.
will render Purim Music.

FIRST

The Greatest Mother
in the World

s

tretching out her hands to relieve distress
wherever found, she is the symbol of a great force
for good in our evil world.
She is the spirit of the Red Cross, a militant,
marching army of good will.
Out of the villages and cities of America, into
the heart of the war torn world marches this great
people's crusade to keep the lights of civilization
burning.

T

HE RED CROSS is pressing forward on every front. It is
carrying overseas ever increasing stores of relief supplies,
clothing and medicines to the war victims with all that goes with
that vast operation of distribution, warehousing, transportation
and administration.
It is shoulder to shoulder with our fighting forces from train-
ing camp to the front lines. Understanding and helping with the
problems and troubles of the service men and their families.
Sharing the dangers of combat to make those little things that
mean so. much to men available in shell hole or life raft.
Making the weary days of convalescence more bearable with

the human touch and cheerful sympathy that the Gray Ladies
give so well.
Training our people on the Home Front. Fighting to sustain
public health when doctors and trained nurses go to war. Mil-
lions learning through Red Cross First Aid, Home Nursing
Courses, Canteen, Motor Corps and Nurse's Aide training to
meet the new needs and the grim civilian dangers of modern Nvar flre.
Collecting our people's blood for plasma given so freely and
needed so urgently in ever increasing amounts as the casualty lists
grow. Organizing and sustaining thousands of production groups
where our women give long hours to provide surgical dressings
and clothing in enormous quantities.

The barest outline of how the Red Cross serves. It belongs to
all of us, it must have support from all.
The Second War Fund is greater than the First, but no greater
than the increased needs.
You will not fail the Greatest Mother in the World.
