The Father of
Our Country
Not alone for his courage, truth
and might,
Did Washington's principles seem
just, right.
He surpassed other men in an-
other great deed.
Avoiding every road which led to
greed.
He put aside wealth and political
power,
He refused a Crown as the man
of the hour.
To revere, forever, his memory, to
honor his name
Another great Victory shall come
through his fame.

Rabbi M. Applebaum
Inaugurated Program
Of Jewish Education
Rabbi Morton Applebaum of
Lansing, Director of B'nai B'rith
Michigan Educational Council,
spoke to over 200 members of the
East Side and Louis Marshall
Lodges and their auxiliaries, in.
eluding the Business and Profes-
sional Groups at the Rose Sittig
Cohen Auditorium.
This meeting inaugurated a
program of education on Jewish
history, cultural background and
problems for all B'nai B'rith
Lodges and auxiliaries in the
State of Michigan. In the first
of this series, Rabbi Applebaum
devoted the entire period to a
discussion of the Jewish holidays
—their origin, significance and
servance.
"Many Jews of today have lost
sight of the sheer beauty of their
own holidays and this new pro-
gram is to explore the many col-
orful and delightful occasions
based on some important Hebrew
event in our history," said the
rabbi. The rabbi continued, "When
this series is completed all mem-
bers of the B'nai B'rith will have
a clearer understanding of Jew-
ish history and holidays and take
more delight in observing the tra-
ditions, particularly will this be
true of those having children."

At the donor luncheon given
by the Detroit Unit of Junior
Hadassah last Sunday afternoon,
the Hon. Cyril Cane, British Con-
sul for the Michigan and Ohio
area, greeted the assembly in the
name of the British government
and identified himself as a friend
of the Zionist movement and of
the Hadassah organization in par-
ticular.
Miss Anne Baker, president of
the Detroit Unit, urged Mr. Cane
to lift his voice in our behalf in
his contacts with the British gov-
ernment, and informed the group
generally of the need for infor-
mation in the right places, and
of the vital need and importance
of Hadassah's work today.
The luncheon was attended by
approximately 150 girls and
mothers and was under the chair-
manship of Miss Edith Wiener.
The invocation was given by Ida
Sandra Milstein, vocal selections
were rendered by Miss Thelma
Jaffin, of Habonim, and a very
inspiring and entertaining ad-
dress was delivered by Rabbi
Benjamin Groner of the Shaar
Shomayim Synagogue of Wind-
sor, Ontario.
Miss Marion Hoffman was
crowned Queen of Jr. Hadassah
for having earned the most money
towards the luncheon.
