WORDS and MUSIC Henrietta Szold on Her 82nd Birthday Plants
Tree No. 83 in Forest Dedicated fo Her
By DANIEL L. SCHORR

HEARING THINGS:

Henrietta Szold, the outstand-
ing American Jewish woman of
our generation and founder of
Hadassah, affectionately referred
to in Palestine as the "first lady
of the Yishub," was the recipient
of a unique honor on her 82nd
birthday which she celebrated in
December last: the Palestine
branches of WIZO, the Women's
International Zionist Organiza-
tion, in cooperation with the Jew-
ish National Fund, began the
planting of a forest of 10,000
trees in her name. The forest
area is located on the slope of
one of the tallest mountains in
Judaea, at Maaleh Ila'Chamisha,
in the vicinity of Jerusalem.
The festive occasion was at-
tended by representatives of
WIZO branches in Palestine, del-
egates of national institutions
and outstanding leaders of Pales-
tine Jewry. A simple but im-
pressive ceremony marked the
planting. The first and 83rd trees
were set into the soil by Miss

Szold herself while representa-
tives of the Jewish National
Fund, the Hadassah, the WIZO
and other institutions planted the
remaining trees. Children from
Maaleh Ho'Chamisha planted the
84th tree which was marked with
the numeral "120" as an expres-
sion of Palestine Jewry's birth-
day wishes for the prolongation
of Miss Szold's life to the Bibli-
cal "120 years." Miss Szold, in a
moving address, expressed her
gratitude for the tribute paid her
and urged that "every effort be
made to save the Jewish children
from the Nazi-occupied lands."
On Feb. 22, George Washing-
ton's birthday will be marked in
Palestine by the planting of addi-
tional trees in the Washington
Forest which was begun a dec-
ade ago by American Jews on the
occasion of the observance of the
bicentennial anniversary of the
birth of the first President of the
United States.

This being about the middle of
the musical season, it may be a
good point to mention some of the
good music I've heard in recent
weeks which I haven't previously
discussed.
Early in December. Artur Rod-
zinski, who was later to be an-
nounced as musical director and
p•rmanent conductor of the New
York Philharmonic for next year,

chestra, of which I remember par-
ticularly his reading of the Shos-
takovich Seventh symphony. The
controversy over the merits of the
work still rages and will prob-
oblv rage for a long time to come
