HITHER AND YON

The Allied planes will continue
to "raise the Duce" until the
Italians have booted the number
one heel out of Italy.

Little Isador Shapiro rushed
into the grocery store. Banging
a dime down on the counter he
panted, "Gimme for ten cents
animal crackers. Take out the
pigs !"

Did you know that:
Paula Lydia Rabinowitsch-Kem-
pner, a bacteriologist, was the
first woman appointed a profes-
sor in Prussia.
The sugar cane industry was
developed in Natal by Aaron de
Pass.
Cretenism and its converse was
first attributed to the activity
or inaction of the thyroid gland
by Moritz Schiff.
Hannah Adams was the first
American historian of the Jews.

Ever noticed that the stork and
wolf usually work the same
neighborhood?

The beginning of a New Year
always puts me in a reflective
mood—and once again I wind up
with the same resolutions: I hope
I shall always—retain enough of
a sense of humor to he able to
laugh at myself . . . appreciate
beauty, especially in nature—for
as long as nature is worth lov-
ing, life is worth living . . .
maintain a sincere regard for
perfection . . . enjoy the spon-
taneous laughter of little children
. . be aroused by injustice . •
Profit by my mistakes and not
hold post-mortems over what
might have been . . . endeavor,
in my own small way, to increase
the nation's laughter . . . be
able to live with myself by keep-
ing an open mind, being tolerant,
and in facing the issue, not alibi

my way out of it.

The discoverer of vitamins was
a Jew, Casimir Funk—but why
in heaven's name did he discover
them in everything I don't like?

For the past few years the
following story has been told and
retold in the dictator-controlled
countries:
The dictator, it seems, had
slipped away from his palace in
order to find out how he really
stood with the people, and with
hat turned down and collar up
he took a seat in the shadows of
a picture theatre. His own por-
trait was flashed on the screen.
The people stood up mechanically.
The dictator, tired and pre-oc-
cupied, did not. His neighbor
leaned over and said, "I agree
with you, friend, but all the
same you'd better stand."
. . . —
A modern ittersion of Mr. Web-
ster's Dictionary:
Union trouble—marriage.
IIitler Cocktail—one drink and
you don't know what you're doing.
No—a girl's word of honor.
Swing—music gone mad.
Dressmaker — a woman who
looks at life from the 'seamy'
side.
Facts of Life—A lesson in An-
cient History given to the mod-
ern miss.
Boxer—survival of the fistest.
Egg—F a v or i to "yolk" of vaud-
evillians.
. . . —
If only the concept — class-
hatred—did not have more signi-
ficance than that meant by school
children,
. . . —
The Jews have always stood by
the graves of their oppressors.
