I 942

The year 1942 has proved that the
United States of America can carry on
under civil rule despite the fact that we
are at war on many fronts. With but few
exceptions the civil authorities were able
to settle all economic disputes. We held
national and state elections without caus-
ing any dislocation.
Our courts functioned just as in times
of peace. Those obstructionist pro-Nazi
and pro-Fascist elements who violated the
law have been tried according to due
process and have been convicted by juries
who were not intimidated by any undue
clamor.
We have enjoyed freedom of speech
and assembly and our press has imposed
a censorship upon itself in the public
interest.
If we have not adhered to the spirit
of the Constitution in our treatment of
the Japanese, we have at least treated
them decently and humanly. On the other
hand, we have removed alien Italians
from the category of enemy aliens. There
has been no witch hunting and no mass
demonstrations against any people or
group.
We have lived up to the best traditions
of America in this year of war. This can-
not be overemphasized inasmuch as we
are engaged in a conflict to preserve and
defend the American dream of freedom
and equality. It would indeed be a trag-
edy if the men and women who are doing
the actual fighting would return to a
world where all they have fought for had
disappeared.
We are confident that the leaders of
America shall exert themselves to the
utmost to the end that we shall continue
to enjoy the freedoms and equalities that
we have won.

Some Clear Thinking

Nahum Goldman, ambassador-at-large
of the Jewish people, struck a realistic
note at the convention of the Jewish
National Fund at the Book-Cadillac Hotel
on Sunday, Dec. 27, when he emphasized
the importance of purchasing and reclaim-
ing the land and soil of Palestine. To him,
ideological considerations are not nearly
as important as physical facts and, conse-
quently he praised the Jewish National
Fund and Dr. Israel Goldstein, its head
for the last decade, for the splendid work
done in land purchase and reclamation.
If the question of the absorptive capac-
ity of Palestine is ever to be taken out
of the realm of disputation and argument,
it will be done by the purchase and recla-
mation of the soil of that country. If and
when large areas are brought under or
are prepared for cultivation, utilizing the
science of agronomy to the fullest extent
possible, then it can be demonstrated be-
yond doubt how many people can be
supported by agriculture. And if and when
scientific researches are made as to the
extent and nature of the natural resources
of the land, some estimate can then be
made as to the quantity of goods that can
be produced under modern scientific man-
agement.
This question of capacity to produce is
not confined to Palestine. We in America
have heard endless disputations as to our
capacity to produce, and it is being settled
now by our actual production. In 1929
our national income was 80 billion dol-
lars. There was one school that argued
that we had almost reached the limit of
our capacity to produce, while another

January I, 1943

school insisted that we could produce
from 50 to 100 per cent more.
In the year 1942 our national income
will be 117 billions of dollars, and mil-
lions of able-bodied men and women are
in the armed and governmental services
of the country. We are producing 50 per
by AL SEGAL
cent more than in 1929 with many less
workers. This is demonstration. Palestine
can do the same if the opportunity is
given by land purchase and reclamation
and exploitation of the natural resources
of the country.

PLAIN TALK

Education For Nazis

Cold Consolation

According to a British radio report in
an article that appeared in Das Reich, the
weekly published by Joseph Goebbels, an
all time low has been reached in German
propaganda in its attempt to console the
German families who face extinction be-
cause of the enormous losses on the Rus-
sian front.
The article broadcast seems incompre-
hensible to moderns, the text of which is
"Modern man, too, has in his bright
moments an appreciation of the cor-
rectness of the view of antiquity that
the gods let those die young whom
they love particularly."
In the same article Goebbels writes:
"There are families in our country
who have sacrificed in this war three
or more sons for the Reich. Some lost
all their male descendents and are
faced with the extinction of their
name. Where else can they find con-
solation but in a higher ethical value
of the war for which we are all
exerting ourselves with hot passion."
We doubt very much that the propa-
ganda opium and hashish disseminated
by Goebbels can bring these bright mo-
ments to the dispirited, weary and hope-
less German people. They have been ex-
posed to modern thought for too long
a time to be duped by the pagan, bar-
baric concepts of brutal antiquity. Many
of the indoctrinated youth of Germany
may have the high moments of apprecia-
tion of the correctness of dying young,
but it is stupid folly to believe that the
families of these men can be taken in
by such maudlin and brutal propaganda.
Adding insult to injury, he consoles the
mothers and fathers of Germany who
have lost all their sons that they are
making these sacrifices in the name of
"the higher ethical value of the war for
which we all are exerting ourselves with
hot passion". This must sound like hollow
mockery to the mothers and fathers of
Germany, who were assured that the war
would be a bloodless adventure in which
the invincible armies of the Nazis would
conquer the world.
Does Joseph Goebbels believe that all
Germans are so depraved and brutalized
that they can be made to believe that
this war of extermination and unheard-of
brutality is one of higher ethical value?
In the case of Joseph Goebbels and
his fellow criminal madmen, the notion
of antiquity, that the gods first make mad
those whom they would destroy is more
apt.

nic of massacres, but it seems to
me that the massacre of 2,000,000
victims within the borders of a
nation can be successfully accom-
plished only if it has the im-
moral support of the masses of
the nation. Even in such an effi-
cient country as Germany, the
mere labor of massacre so enorm-
ous must take multitudes
of
hands.
A slaughter that im-
mense can not go on with. the
knowledge, sanction and assist-
ance of the nation.
I am sure Mr. Simms would
never be thanked for taking a
piece of Germany away from the
Germans and thereby causing in-
fected Germans to be spread to
the social body of mankind. The
Jews themselves— to whom Mr.
Simms would give this piece of
Germany — would say: "Thanks
for your generous intentions, Mr.
Simms, but, really, we don't think
you should do this to the world.
Injecting Nazi Germans into the
body of mankind!
Not that I would forever keep
Germans locked up in their own
country, quarantined from con-
tact with the human race. No!
I believe in the saving grace of
moral and spiritual education and
I like to believe that by a course
of such education Germans may
in the fullness of time become
safe people to let out into the
world and to be allowed to min-
gle with all the other human seg-
ments.

I propose is a mis-
sionary movement to the
Germans. Recently, in accounts of
our warfare in the South Pacific,
I have been much enheartened
to read what fairly decent, tract-

ence on what can be done about
Germans. The disposal of Hitler,
Goebbels, Goering,, Hinder, et al,
will not have solved anything,
the conference would be aware
that the German people them-
selves make the more awful prob-
lem: The way they have allowed
themselves to be led from the
bright height of civilized man to
the abysmal cave; the way they
have flaunted themselves as the
superior people, contrary not only
to the horrid facts of German life
but contrary also to the idea of
equal brotherhood; the way their
minds, by a long course of Nazi
education, have been totalitarian-
ized to the brutalitarian concept
that to make sure they really are
superior, they must annihilate
other peoples suspected of having
merits of their own; the way, even
long before Hitler's time, they
were a problem people, a terrible

conference would organ-

education toward improving the
morals and manners of the Ger-
mans. It may take at least that
long to disinfect their minds and
then to re-educate them in ac-
cordance with ideas of civilized
practice.
My missionaries then would
proceed to Germany. As mis-
sionaries I have in mind such men
as the Archbishop of Canterbury
the American philosopher John
Dewey, the Chinese Hu Shih. I
would include the German pastor,
Dr. Niemoeller who is in Ger-
