Battle Creek Jewry
Observes Chanukah

The Chanukah Holiday at Bat-
tle Creek was observed this year
by the entire Jewish Community
of Battle Creek, together with
over 100 soldiers from the Fort
Custer area and a group of host-
esses from Detroit and Kalama-
zoo.
Starting at 6 p. m. on Sunday,
Dec. 6, with the ceremony of the
lighting of the Chanukah candles
by Rabbi Wm. B. Silverman, fol-
lowed by the "Star Spangled Ban-
ner,' the Chanukah festive ten-
dered at Carpenter's Hall in Bat-
tle Creek, lasted well into the
evening.
It was a- heart warming spec-
tacle to see rows of khaki seated
at the dinner table, being served
gaily by the civilian members of
the community, while steaming
platters of food were prepared
in the kitchen by the women's
groups.
Dinner was followed by dancing
to the rhythms of Ken Whitman's
orchestra and entertainment fur-
nished by the Battle Creek peo-
ple.
Sponsored by the War Service
Committee of the Michigan Bnai
Brith Council, Rabbi Wm. B.
Silverman, chairman, the event
was carried out in cooperation
with the Jewish Welfare Board

Army and Navy Committee of
Battle Creek, A. J. Pearlman,
chairman and Samuel Kurzon;
JWB Director; Temple Beth El
Sisterhood, Chairman Mrs. Lawr-
ence Ely; and the Myer J. Frank-
lin Lodge of the Bnai Brith of
Battle Creek, President Lou
Stein.
Program chairmen were Herb
Silver, Mrs. Irma Hoffman and
Mrs. A. J. Pearlman. Dinner was
prepared under the chairmanship
of Mrs. Sam Weiss.
The Chanukah Celebration was
the climax of a week end party
which began Saturday night at
the USO—West Michigan Club.
The Hostess group represent-
ing the League of Detroit Jewish
Youth, stayed at Battle Creek
homes for the week end, through
the arrangement of the Hospital-
ity Committee of the JWB Army
and Navy Committee, and par-
ticipated with the soldiers in a
mass breakfast at the USO Club
on Sunday morning. Following
was an afternoon of fun at the
Youth Building in Battle Creek,
where soldiers and hostesses en-
gaged in athletics and swimming,
with snowball fights on the way,
to the general hilarity.
All were unanimous in their
expression that this was a glori-
ous week end.
