Dusk began to change into
darkness when Gretchen reached

that she was not seen by anyone,
she sidled in the heavy gate and,
like a thief, tiptoed up the stairs.

was no answer to her light knock,
so she tried the door which open-
ed easily. The familiar hall had
a strange air about it and Gretch-
en halted a moment before she
took another step.
Her last visit came back to her
in a flash. How well she remem-
bered Walter's sudden sickness!
