American Jewish Organizations Hail Joint
United Nations Declaration Against Nazis

NEW YORK. (WNS) — The
joint declaration issued by the
United States and other United
Nations, condemning the Nazi
mass murders of Jews and vowing
speedy punishment for those re-
sponsible for the bloody pogroms
on Jews, was hailed by American
Jewish leaders and organizations
in statements made public this
week.
Maurice Wertheim, president
of the American Jewish Com-
mittee, declared "The Jews of
America will receive with gratifi-
cation the statement of the
United Nations condemning the
bestial cold-blooded policy of the
1---4 Nazis to exterminate the Jews
in the territories they have oc-
cupied, and reaffirming the sol-
emn resolution of the United Na-
tions to insure that those re-
sponsible for these crimes shall
not escape retribution and to
press on with the necessary prac-
tical measures to that end.
"That statement will awaken
the heart and conscience of the
world to what is happening in
the European lands dominated
by the Nazis, and will give the
Jews renewed hope that these
cruel, barbaric crimes against the
civilian populations there may be
stopped. All Jews and their fel-

low Americans of every faith will
be thankful for this heartening
statement by our own Govern-
ment and by the governments of
the United Nations."
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president
of the American Jewish Congress,
said: "The Declaration of the
United Nations condemning Ger-
many's cold-blooded extermina-
tion of European Jewry and sol-
emnly pledging retribution for
the perpetrators of these crimes,
is a document of the greatest
historic significance. As an ex-
pression of the collective con-
science of the United Nations,
outraged by the horror wreaked
upon Jews and other civilian pop-
ulations, it will solace and
hearten the Jewish people
throughout the world. Reaffirm-
ing the determination of the
free peoples that the murderous
Axis may not with impunity as-
sail and destroy any race or
faith or people, it will be eagerly
welcomed and approved by Amer-
icans of every faith.
"Of even greater importance
is the possibility that this stern
warning to the Nazis and their
Axis partners may prevent in
part, at least, the fulfillment of
Hitler's hideous program of ex-
termination, if the immediate

that Ben started his literary ca-

worth of bonds—and brought in
sixteen friends for the free eats.

gracing with their presence—and
we presume he took a good look,
WE REPORT
At the time of the late Zionist
leader Abraham Goldberg's sud-
den death some months ago his
son Mordecai was expecting a
blessed event, and naturally de-
cided that if the expected• off-
spring should turn out to be a
boy he would be named after his
distinguished grandfather . . . But
Fate did not cooperate insofar as
the sex of the new generation
was concerned, and the Mordecai
Goldberg household youngsters
Amy and Barbara . . . Get it?
. . . Their initials make AB
GOLDBERG . . . Under way be-
fore long, you should know, will
be the publication of a volume
of Goldberg's essays in English
translation, a project which he
had long been planning- and for
which he had collected a consid-
erable number of his character
sketches and studies of outstand-
ing Jewish leaders in every field
of endeavor.
LITERARY NEWS
Featured in the Hartford,
Conn., Courant, America's oldest
newspaper, a couple of weeks ago
were three sonnets by the Hebrew
poet Zalman Shneur, as translat-
ed by Maurice Sampel . . . Lion
Feuchtwanger's new novel is
promised for spring publication.
Translation trouble is the reason
for the delay in the appearance
of the book on the distinguished
philosopher and Zionist leader
Max Nordau, written by his eigh-
ty-year-old widow and his daugh-
te• Maxa . . . The volume will,
however be published within the
next two months.
TABLECLOTH NOTES
At last week's Jewish Army
Proclamation Dinner Senator
Barkley of Kentucky, unaware
that friction had ever existed be-
tween the Committee for a Jewish
Army and the Zionists, spoke in
a highly complimentary manner
of Dr. Chaim Weizmann—and he
was roundly applauded by his

audience . . . Relations between
the Zionists and the Army Com-
mittee have improved a great
deal recently, of course, but this
rapproachment is in danger of be-
ing marred by an unwarranted
attack which the Jewish Agency
office at London has made on the
executive head of the Anglo-Amer-
ican Committee for a Jewish
Army, Captain I. Halpern . . .
Diners at the Army banquet, by
the way, were deeply moved to
see tears coursing down the
cheeks of stage and screen star
Frederick March as he read the
"Proclamation on the Moral Rights
of the Stateless and Palestinian
Jews" to the assembly . . . What
his listeners didn't know was
that, as he rushed over to the
dinner from his hit show, "The
Skin of Our Teeth," Frederick
had got a cinder in his eye.
RELIGIOUS ANGLE
Among the altar pieces which
the Citizen's Committee for the
Army and Navy is providing for
the use of chaplains in both serv-
ice branches are a number of
beautiful paintings expressing the
spirit of Judaism . . . Outstand-
ing among these is one called
"Winged Lions and Candlesticks,"
by Henri G. Courtais, the center-
piece of which is the double
tablet of the Hebrew Ten Com-
mandments . . . To the best of
our knowledge Courtais is not
Jewish . . . And here comes Dr.
Nathaniel J. Reich of the Dropsie
College with a new explanation
of why the Biblical Laban had to
resort to trickery to marry off
his daughter Leah to our ances-
tor Jacob . . . Leah, Dr. Reich
deduces from the description of
her in Genesis, was nothing more
or less than an albino.
"Grand Street Boys," a film
that Boris Morros is planning to
produce, will tell the stories of a
number of boys who grew up in
New York's East Side to become
outstanding members of the com-
munity . . . Among the men the
picture will present are Irving
Berlin, George S. Kaufman and
Billy Rose . . . Billy, incidentally,
confesses that when he was a
kid he wanted to be a diamond
cutter, so that he would con-
stantly be surrounded by the
sparkling stones . . . Is that, we
wonder, the reason why he nam-
ed his night club "Billy Rose's
Diamond Horseshoe?" • . . Come-
dian Danny Kaye is still wowing
'em on Broadway in the hit musi-
cal "Let's Face It," and after
that finishes its run he's due in
Hollywood for a screen chore .. .
But after these commitments have
been fulfilled he's leaving these
shores to entertain the boys at
U. S. Army camps abroad . . •
That inspiring United Nations
song by Shostakovitch, for which
Harold J. Rome wrote the Eng-
lish lyric, and which you no
doubt have heard on the air or
in a recording, will be featured
in a forthcoming M-G-M motion
picture . . . Film director Irving
Pichel, of the Cincinnati Pichels,
who did such a swell job on
"The Pied Piper," is now hard
at work on another major opus,
"The Moon Is Down."
