came to power, they made a
discrimination against the Jews
as one of the main principles of
their policy. It was an obvious
course to pursue. It fitted in
with Hitler's known personal
complex about the Jews. It prom-

might in this way be relieved of
business rivals. It offered the
Party an excellent alibi for all
its failures; if anything went
wrong, they could always blame
the Jews.
But above all, the Nazi policy
towards the Jews was the thin
end of the wedge. A group of
people helpless, without any
means of defending themselves,
is robbed of their rights and
their property, is treated like
salves—and the great majority
of the German people stands by
and watches, is ready to offer
excuses for this behavior, is

But I tell you—this treatment

Jews, on the ground that they
belonged to a different race, are
now persecuting and enslaving
the peoples of other nations,
Poles, Czechs, Frenchmen, Dutch-
men, Norwegians. Why not? The
principle is the same. If you are
entitled to maltreat a person

Why does Hitler persecute the
Jews? Partly because he him-
self hates Jews and believes all
the primitive medieval supersti-
tion about the Elders of Zion;
but mainly because he is a
clever politician. He knew from
the first that to realize his plans
of world war and world con-
quest he would have to demand
sacrifices, colossal sacrifices, from
Germany. If he said openly what
he meant to do he would be de-
stroyed by Germany. So he said
to himself, "I am going to make
Germany suffer and to do that
and retain my rule I must put
the blame for that suffering on
someone else. I must find a
scapegoat. Someone every Ger-
man an blame and persecute for
his sufferings. I will teach the
Germans, therefore, that the
Jews are the cause of everything
bed, unemployment, war, defeat,
everything. I will teach them to
torture the Jews, to release their
resentment on the Jews. Then
they will overlook who is really
responsible for the suffering."
So Hitler has taught Germany
to torture the Jews to prevent
them from turning against the
real "Kriegsverbrecher". It is an
old trick. Wicked rulers have
used it time after time in the
Middle Ages to exploit primitive
superstitions.
So I suggest to you: each time
you see a half-starved man or
woman with a Star of David do
not say to yourself simply, "They
should not go that far." Say to
yourself : "There goes a German
scapegoat. I, a member of the
German Herrenvolk, am allowed
—no, ordered—to torture and
starve that human being simply
in order that I, a German wom-
an, should forget my real Ger-
man enemy."
