The new demonstrations oc- cured throughout the country in the face of an official announce- ment over the Vichy radio that further resistance to Laval's anti-Jewish program is useless and that pro-Jewish demonstra- tors would be severly punished In Paris the Nazi-controlled press accused the United States Embassy in Vichy of organizing and promoting the anti-collabo•a- tionist and pro-Jewish outbreaks which were reported to have taken place in Nice, Lyons, Toul- ouse, Montpellier and Villefrance. Catholic leaders in France con- tinued to spark the popular move- ment against the anti-Jewish de- crees. Dispatches from Paris re- ported that Mgr. Chaptal, Bishop of Paris, appeared in public wearing a yellow "Mogen David" in defiance of the Nazi authori- ties. Catholic priests and laymen in Paris immediately followed their Bishop's example. The resistance of Catholic leaders to the deportations has reached such a point that the Vichy radio this week warned Archbishop Sallege of Toulouse either to halt his pro-Jewish activities or leave the country. The Archbishop has been one of the bulwarks against enforcement of the anti-Jewish program. Last week the Laval regime ordered the arrest and internment of Father Chaillet, another Catholic leader.
