Brazil has, next to the United
States, the largest negro popula-
tion outside Africa. But more
important than that statistical
record is the Brazilian way of
handling the country's negro pop-
ulation. It is quite true that the
Portuguese settlers did not drag
the negro from Africa as an ex-
ercise in race distribution. They
did it because they wanted an
abundance of labor that could
feel comfortable in that Brazil-
ian climate. But once they
brought them into the country,
they did not set up a color line.
The Portuguese had seen the
black Moors for centuries on the
Iberian peninsula of Portugal and
Spain. They saw the dark-skinned
Moors in their country when the
Jews flourished in medieval Spain.
The only line that the Portu-
guese in Brazil could draw in the
face of this background of ex-
perience, could therefore not pos-
sibly be a color line. It had to be
a class line.
Among the slaves dragged over
