THE GOVERNOR'S NEW YEAR MESSAGE TO
THE JEWS OF MICHIGAN

Aug. 25, 1942

ARBOR TOOL CO.

Mr. Jacob Margolis,
Publisher.
Detroit Jewish Chronicle,
525 Woodward Avenue,
Detroit. Michigan.
Dear Mr. Margolis:
I am happy to extend once more, through the med-
ium of the Detroit Jewish Chronicle, a message of greet-
ing and friendship to Michigan Jewry on the occasion of
your great religious holiday, Rosh Hashonah.
Your people. who long have held that all men are
free and equal before God. are working and fighting
side by side with their fellow Americans in the war
program. at home and on the battlefronts of the world.
With deep admiration for the traditions of Jewry.
whole-hearted appreciation for a noble people's per-
severing opposition to the pagan slavemaster of Europe,
and sincere sympathy for the suffering such opposition
has brought Jewry. Michigan extends good wishes for
the New Year 5703.
Very truly yours,
Murray D. Van Wagoner,
Governor.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

JERUSALEM (Palcor) — Dur-
ing March, 1842, deposits in Pal-
estine banks showed a drop after
having risen almost uninterrup-
tedly since the previous June. In
the eight months from July, 1941
to February, 1942, deposits had
risen by £24,000,000 at February
29th this year; but at the end

of March they had dropped to
£22,100,000.
In banking circles it is ex-
plained that the decrease came
about in connection with the need
for large funds to finance the
increased import trade. Deposits
are understood again to have
shown a rise in April and May.
On the other hand, there was
a larger demand for banking
credit. While the outstanding bal-
ances at the end of each month
rose by only £200,000 from the
end of March to December last
year, from January to March,
1942 the increase was by £950,-
000.

It is now a question of "to be or not to be" for the
United Nations. It is either we who die, or the Axis.
Either falsehood oppression, paganism, cruelty and
slavery will overwhelm us, or America will take the lead
in banishing these evils from a world of which we are
an integral part.
In this supreme struggle for survival, the Jewish
people must participate as a group since Hitler has
specifically singled them out for total destruction.
That is why I hope that the New Year will bring
about the creation of a Jewish Army of stateless and
Palestinian Jews. Such an army is the best guarantee
the United Nations can give at this time to the world's
most persecuted people that it can expect true justice
when the war is won.
If the Jews of America will it with all their hearts
and with all their determination, the Jews will get a
fighting chance.
On the threshold of a new year which may well
decide the fate of humanity, I want to believe that the
courageous stateless and Palestinain Jews will, under
their own banner, help carve our new world order in
the battle for democracy.
