McFarland Supports
Roosevelt Policies

Edward W. McFarland is run-
ning for the Democratic nomina-
tion to congress in the thirteenth
district on a platform of support
for President Roosevelt's policies
of winning the war and guaran-
teeing the rights of the individual
citizen.
"Mac" knows the people of De-
troit from having lived here since
1915, and the people know him
for his outstanding service in a
number of jobs to which he has
been appointed in the past, be-
sides his work in the schools.
Mayor Frank Murphy asked
him to work on his unemployment
committee when the factories had
laid off thousands of ,men and
"prosperity was just around the
corner." Earlier, the late Senator
Couzens, when he was mayor, had
asked "Mac" to serve on Detroit's
first unemployment committee back
in 1921 so he was already experi-
enced in this field.
He knew labor problems so well
that he was named to several
1 a b o r- management mediation
boards, and when the late John
W. Smith was mayor he asked
McFarland to become a member
of the Detroit Inter-Racial Study
Committee.

Jewish Welfare Board
Sponsors USO Picnic

Bernard J. Youngblood's ap-
pointment to the office of reg-
ister of deeds is assurance to the
citizens of Wayne County that a
high standard of efficiency will be
continued in this branch of coun-
ty government.
During the four years that he
served as d e p u t y register of
deeds, many improvements in the
system of recording and many
economies were effected that won
for that office, the reputation of
being the most efficient public
business conducted in the State
of Michigan.
The taxpayers of Wayne Cour•
ty can well be guided by the
same considerations that led the
prosecutor, the county clerk and
Judge of probate to consider Mr.
Youngblood the best qualified
candidate for the position of reg-
ister of deeds.

September 11, 1942

Sunday's diversion for g u es t s
at the West Michigan Avenue
USO Club was a picnic dinner at
Willard Park, Goguac Lake. In
the party besides the civilian
hosts, The Meyer J. Franklin
Lodge of B'nai B'rith, were more
than 100 soldiers and a group of -
girls who came from Detroit for
the event.
Dinner was served by the B'nai
B'rith. The afternoon was spent
swimming, playing badminton and
other sports. Afterward the group
returned to the club for (lancing.
Refreshments were served again
after dancing. These picnics have
become a regular Sunday feature
this Summer, sponsored by the
Jewish Welfare Board of the USO
cooprating with various civilian
organizations in Battle Creek and
Detroit, among which have been
the Sisterhood of Temple Beth El
and the local chapter of B'nai
B'rith.
