War years are tragic for all people, and Jewish people all over the world have suffered for a long time in war torn and conquered countries. Now in this coun- try they are helping their fellow Americans to win the war and we all join together in the hope that for all people of all minorities, the victory will mean a happier life in the future. Sincerely yours, Eleanor Roosevelt. A New Year Message From the Navy Secretary, Fronk Knox Aug. 25, 1942 My dear Mr. Margolis: In reply to your request for a message to the Jew- ish people of Detroit on the occasion of the annual cele- bration of their New Year, September 12th, 1942, I am glad to comply in suggesting the following thoughts as appropriately significant at this time: To a people who, throughout their long history, have been noted for their sustained ability to sacrifice, I need hardly point out, except by way of vivid remind. er , that this new year holds an increasing degree of sacrifice, not only for the principles and ideals they have long cherished, but for actual Survival in whatever terms one chooses to define that phrase :—whether as a people, a religious community, a form of government and life under such government, or as an independent nation. And this introduces my second and more important thought which is expressed both as fact and as good counsel: In order to survive, the people of this nation, the United States of America, must subordinate all in- terests of race, of creed, of sect, group or self-centered individuality to the end of integration in a great national effort for survival. Disunity or the setting of personal or group interests ahead of national welfare can, in moral and spiritual respects, more seriously defeat our ends than anything our enemies can accomplish from outside our territorial domain. I feel sure that your people, at the start of their New Year, will not be unmindful of these truths and, as part of their anniversary celebration, it is my hope that they may nobly dedicate themselves to the realiza- tion of these truths in daily living through the coming period of months or years when we must all think of ourselves primarily as citizens of a Great Nation on Trial. Sincerely yours, Frank Knox.
