The gap left in our socio-religious lives by his passing, has been left largely unfilled for it has been difficult to find a new leader to match such a predecessor. The qualities of hope in a better world for man on this earth, of devotion to Torah and its principles and of sincerity in office have been and are those rare virtues we ar• sometimes fortunate to glimpse in contemporary life. Rabbi Zager's life reflected all of these qualities. As Rosh Ha- shanah approaches this year, we commemorate the Yahzeit of Rab- bi Menachim Mendell Halevi Zag- er, one of the most popular spir- itual leaders of Detroit Orthodox Jewry, who passed into his Re- ward while in the fullness of his intellectual powers and the ma- turity of his sagacity and learn- ing at the premature age of 54 years. Two years have passed since Rabbi Zager's demise, and with his Yahrzeit come renewed memories dating as far back as his boyhood when I first came to know him as a countryman of his in Europe. His environ- ment and means in the small town from which he came meant Rosh Hashonah Greetings to All—Best Wishes to the Entire Jewish Community for a Happy New Year AL MILLER 7720 McNICHOLS ROAD. But thru all of this Rabbi Zager found t h LATE RABBI M. M. ZAGER strength in his love for The T or a h to endure privation. Through all of this he studied zealously and prepared himself to become a leader among men. He was an exception to the dic- tum of the rabbis (Pirhe Aboth "He who observes the Torah while in poverty will live to ob- serve it in plenty." Rabbi Zager acquired the foun- dations to his thorough Talmud- ical knowledge in the famous rabbinical academies in Russia and Poland. In this country he further pursued his studies find- ing his reward and satisfaction in the realms of the spiritual spheres, financial rewards being ever modest. Rabbi Zager was the typical Talmud Chochom, who found the reason for, and happiness of his existence in the study and ob- servance of the Torah and in re- flection on the eternal verities of Judaism. He found special pride in his sermons and biblical com- mentaries. The synagogues which were priv- ileged to have him as their spir- itual leader for the short time he was with us feel his absence yet today. His wife and two daughters, who live and perpetuate in their lives the religious concepts and ideals of their father, have been fortunate in having had such a husband and father as Rabbi Zager. His blessed memory in the years . to come will serve as an inspiration to them and to the community whom he served so devotedly and well. - - – a student of Congregation B'nai Israel's Religious School.
