IMMO IO DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE and The Legal Chronicle ROSH HASHONAH MESSAGE FROM SYNAGOGUE COUNCIL (Representing 1,300 Orthodox. Con live and Reform Rabbis and Congregations) The advent of Rosh Hashonah, the Jewish New Year, bids the Jew turn to reflection and analy- sis touching himself and the world in which he lives. The sound of the Shofar (ram's horn) calls him Godward. Repentance, pray- er, and righteousness, is the three- cold theme of this season of High Holy Days. Basic to the progress of civili- zation is consc i ence. In the light of conscience we examine our- selves and the world. The dignity of man, the sanctity of human life, honor, truth and justice, have been violated by the powerful hosts of godlessness in our time. Yet we have all s'nned in some measure. Our generation has per- mitted the forces of evil to be- come exalted. Now at last, these destructive forces are being suc- cessfully challenged. Rosh Hashonah calls for peni- tence. The calamity of war is not an accidental evil, but is an evidence and consequences of hu- man failure to live up to the law of God. The present hour calls for humility and repentance, for an earnest inquiry into the evils that have generated this war. Rosh Hashonah exhorts to pray- er. Faced with the most power- ful hosts of evil which have ever menaced religion and civilization. we need the strength which comes from earnest prayer. Let our prayers be not only for the safety SEASON'S BEST WISHES When You Think of Fuel Think of Us—Constant Service for 48 Years—For Hand Firing or Stoker TERNES COAL & SUPPLY CO. 6132 MICHIGAN AVE. LA. 5800 and well-being of ourselves and of our country, but for humanity's salvation. Rosh Hashonah calls for right- eousness. Personal righteousness, national righteousness, and inter- national righteousness, is the way of life in which salvation lies. Any state which denies to human beings the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, vio- lates the Law of God. 'Swords can be beaten into ploughshares" only when every man shall sit under his vine and fig tree and none shall make him afraid." The safeguarding of the common in- terests of humanity are the fore- most charge upon the internation- al order. May our great Democ- racy, the United States of Amer- ica, prove equal to the responsibil - - ties of world-wide magnitude which devolve upon it, both in the winning of the war and in the building of the peace to follow. In the Rosh Hashonah mood the Jew envisages his own present affliction in the light of the world's tragedy, and links his hope for his own future with the hope for mankind's future. May the New Year bring us closer to the inev'table victory of freedom's cause, closer to lasting peace and closer to the realization of God's Kingdom on earth. Rabbi Israel Goldstein, President. There is some hope that a large and representative body of Jews may accept the conception of a homeland for Jewish people in Palestine, with the necessity for political protection and recogni- tion, as well as a clear-cut recognition of the political identification of all other Jews with the countries of which they are citizens and a complete disavowal of so-called diaspora and universal citizenship. There are of course extremists who resent any type of political organization for the Jews in Palestine and just trust to luck for the fostering of culture and religious values in that country. Likewise, members of Jewish minorities in countries of persecution and their sympathizers can find their only hope in the recognition of the national unity of Jews, no matter where they are. However, American Jews can best serve their brethren if their representatives will fight for the building up of Jewish autonomy in Palestine, while assisting such stateless Jews as do not care to go to Palestine to find equal citizen. ship either in their lands of origin as democratically re- constituted after the war or in such hospitable countries as will receive them. In this time of turmoil thinking along this line is becoming more and more prevalent and while it is not to be conceived that all Jews \vault' think alike on all subjects there is considerable possibil- ity that representative and responsible groups may find a formula of agreement to which all moderate, realistic and modern Jews may subscribe. BROWN The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashonah, symbolizes the epical story of Israel . . . recording for posterity the triumph of faith and courage over intolerance and persecution, a saga to inspire future generations along the paths of freedom and righteousness. On the eve of the New Year, may the history of Israel continue to record cultural and material contributions toward a more perfect humanity . . . and may the year 5703 record a more progressive civilization, based on justice and enlightened by brotherhood and peace among mankind. It is, therefore, a happy privilege for me to extend hearty felicitations on this most important occasion to my fellow citizens of the Jewish faith of Michigan. 194:
